Upgrade/hot swap 4Tb disk on DS412+ server

Unread post by Ian+Brown » Thu Jan 16, 2014 11:14 pm

Greetings,

Based on information I found concerning upgrading my DS412+ server from 4*2Tb to 4*4Tb (it worked :) according to a happy user) I have just done a hot swap where I replaced a 2Tb disk with a 4Tb disk. Sadly nothing is happening and when I look at storage manager the system informs me that the disk is not initialised. Anybody any idea what I should do?

Regards,

Ian

Greetings,

It looks like I have resolved the problem after some Googling: http://blog.arinium.fi/2013/05/howto-up ... -capacity/.

It looks like it is working. I have replaced and "repaired" 1 disk and as far as I can see all data is accessible. The only weird thing is that I replaced a 2Tb disk with a 4Tb disk and after the repair there is according to the file manager no additional disk space available.

Regards,

Ian

Greetings,

The upgrade has been completed without any problems. It took about 72 hours to complete. During the upgrade (hot swap) the Synology server performed well with no issues other than of course the performance was degraded.

The confusion on my part was that I expected the server on replacing/hot swapping a disk to automatically configure the new disk and rebuild the index. This was obviously not the case. The 2 articles attached provide an excellent description of what to do.

Impact upgrade:

- Original configuration: 4 * 2Tb used 5.33 Tb available 62.20 Gb
- 3 * 2Tb + 1 * 4Tb: Available 62.20 Gb
- 2 * 2Tb + 2 * 4Tb: Available 1.85 Tb
- 1 * 2Tb + 3 * 4Tb: Available 3.64 Tb
- 0 * 2Tb + 4 * 4Tb: Available 5.46 Tb

Regards,

Ian
