Index exisitng photo folder?

Postby kilimats » Sat May 04, 2013 6:55 pm

for years i have been storing my photo in a shared folder and organized it really well in folders

How can i simply ask photo station to INDEX that folder and show it to me on DS Photo keeping the folder structure?

It seems photo station wants you to create album manually which i don't want to spend time on since my folder are already well organized

Free bump.. I have the same issue. I added my photo's folder to the index, and it says it is indexing files, but that was 2 days ago.. Still no photos showing up on my album.

I tested it myself. I can see the photos of my additional library using a DMA player (like windows media player), but neither Photo Station nor DS photo can find this pictures :(

It seems that only the folder /photo is used by Photo Station.
The only workaround i have found (yes, good news, there is at least one !) is to create a symlink in the /photo folder pointing to the external folder to add.

Log in with SSH or Telnet to your Disk Station, cd to the /volume1/photo directory, and then create the link with the ln command, for example :
photos> ln -s /volume1/Archive/MyPhotos MyPhotos

This will create a MyPhotos album with all the subalbums after indexation.

Thanks jls2933!! Very good news!!

Can you explain in detail how to do that, pls?? I am newbie and i don't know how to do.

To access the terminal:

1) Click on Control Panel -> Terminal
2) Check the "Enable SSH service" chcekbox and then click "Apply".
3) Now you need to download an SSH client to your computer. I recommend PuTTy.
4) In the PuTTy client fill in the IP address of your diskstation. The connection type should already be set to "SSH".
5) Click "Open" to start the session. Fill in the admin username and password.
6) Change directory: "cd /volume1/photo"
7) Create link: "ln -s /volume1/Archive/MyPhotos MyPhotos"

Yes, creating the link is not the problem.
If i want to change accessrights to the symlink "folder", how is that done?

Thanks a lot.

With this, I should be able to make my phone photo synchronized with dscloud be taken in account by ds photo. right ? does anyone already tested it ?

because ds cloud working directly inside photo folder is a big mess with a lot of disk space being lost...

I created the Symlink but it didn't work on my ds916+ with DSM 6.1, I used SSH and logged as administrator, and nothing happened.

I had the same issue but I went the easy route and simply moved the entire folder structure and content into the /photo location. Why wouldn't you?
