Can I use disks from DS212j in a DS 218 or DS218j?

Hi,
It looks like my DS212j has died - I suddenly cannot connect to it. I can see it as part of the network but - no connection.
It is connected to an Apple Mac network and has worked flawlessly for just short of 6 years but this morning refused to connect.
If I buy a diskless DS218 or DS218j can I take the disks from the DS212j and put them in the DS218 or DS218j and be able to access the data written by the DS212j
If DS218 and DS218j cannot read disks that were in a DS212j, how can I get the data off one of the disks? (the NAS is in mirror mode)

However...
If I put the old disks in the new NAS might it want to format them - or somehow wipe what data I have when I connect or set the new one up?
Disks were operating in 'mirror' mode (both have the same data on each) would the new NAS recognise that from the info on the disks and accept that as a valid setup?
I don't want to risk putting the old disks in a new NAS and have it decide to wipe everything or me make a mistake and screw it up!

I think I'd prefer to play it safe and get the data off one of the disks before I put them in the new NAS - so, can you suggest a good Mac app (that works on MacOS 10.13.6) to do that please?

Well, I think I'm screwed.
Took one disk out and put it in an external enclosure. It won't show up on a Linux PC (Ubuntu) and not using extFS on my Mac either.
The HDD shows up in Mac disk utility but only gives the options of formatting or ejecting it.
I installed Fuse for MacOS but that didn't work either.

Don't want to mess with the other drive in case I screw that up, if it's not already!

Can I run the DS212j NAS with just one drive in it?
I'll try connecting it to another older Mac I've got that is running OSX Lion 10.7.5

OK, problem solved.
I connected the DS212j directly to my older (Lion) iMac and managed (after a LOT of effort) to get it online.
Backed up all the data (which was intact) to external drives.
Put Disk 1 back in after I had formatted it, all went well and all the data was copied back to it.
NAS now running normally in Raid1.

The problem turned out to be an IP address incompatibility that was hosing the DS212j down, and for some reason it didn't want to let go of its original IP address after I had installed a new modem/router.
I don't often access the DS212j and thought I had used it OK after the modem install, but I was mistaken.
