Unable to access shares via Windows 98

Unread post by benjibarnicals » Sat Aug 11, 2018 10:25 pm

Hi all,

I've got an old Window 98 SE machine that I've been fixing up, and wanted to access shares on my NAS to get some files, the NAS is running the latest DSM 6.2, I have NFS, SMB1,2,3 and AFP protocols running, the Windows 98 machine will see the NAS on the network but I can't access any shares. Guest access is turned off on the NAS.

Am I missing something? Has anyone got suggestions on ways to get this working? For now, I'm using an FTP programme on the Windows 98 machine to connect to the NAS (which works fine BTW).

Hi

Try to enable SMB1 on the DS.

Control Panel, File Service, and the button Advanced setting under SMB

It already is, well, in DSM6.2 you set the minimum SMB and the maximum, 1 and 3 respectively.

On a side note, I have a Raspberry Pi RetroArch machine that is running a Samba 4.x service and that is shown perfectly.

I'm wondering on the DS if I need an LM Hosts/Browsing on?

Hi

Have you enabled WS-Discovery?

Go to Control Panel, File Services, Advanced, and in bottom you can enable WS discovery

Hey Mike,

WS is already enabled.

I'm wondering if its a Windows 98 issue?

Connect with a modern PC and use a USB stick.

That's not the point! Of course, I can use another newer computer and copy files over via USB, but that's not the reason for my post, trying to figure out why SMB shares on the NAS aren't accessible is, for example, people who retro build machines or have old systems lying around and would like to back up that machine to their NAS or copy files to/from.

If this is happening with Windows 98 potentially its the same for Windows 2000, or even XP? Or is there a flaw/bug or issue in how DSM handles SMB/CIFS shares perhaps.

I think it's more an issue that W98 is completely insecure and we've moved beyond it. Why make your Synology insecure to support an obsolete OS?

edit: According to this post the issue appears to be with W98 (see comment 13): https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11499
