How to setup MS Remote Desktop to VM?

Unread post by Willems Tech » Fri May 18, 2018 4:27 am

Here is an other question:

Rather then accessing the VM via the web browser I would like to use the Microsoft Remore Desktop application on a Mac.

I have tried varios tutotials available online but have not made any progress.

Anyone who can help me out here?

Thanks!

open up RDP client, then add a Desktop connection. Under PC name enter your VM IP address that you have assigned to it. Leave all the other settings on default atm, and try and log on.

If you will be asked some credentials, just use username and pass that you would normally use when accessing that VM.

I tried that but it did not work so I must be doing somethign wrong here.
Is it the same iP address as when using the VM trough the web browser?

When you access a machine via browser it open a connection to your nas (and its IP address) and connect to vmm that opens up a remote sessions.

So no, its not the same. Connect to your VM via browser and set up a static ip address like you would on any other machine. Then use that ip address to access that machine via RDP

Thanks!

Just set a manual iP address in the network adapter and it did improve the internet browsing quite a bit. Still not what I get from the desktop on the same network dough.

As for the VM I just found out that the Windows10 Home version doesn't support RDP so I need to upgrade that first.

Will report back later on that.

I bought and installed Windows 10 Pro 64x and have it up and running.
Now I am able to connect using the Microsoft Remote Desktop app on my Mac :D

I updated the Network drivers to the https://miketabor.com/how-to-create-a-v ... ology-nas/ and set a static iP address.

Two questions:
  • How to I access the shared folder on my NAS? I can't see it in File Explorer.
While using the Remote Desktop App its still kind of slow and the internet speed is still a fraction of what is available on the network.
Thank you for helping me out!

How to I access the shared folder on my NAS? I can't see it in File Explorer
open up windows explorer and in the address bar enter something like this:

Code: Select all

\\ip_address_of_your_nas
end hit return. It should connect to your nas and pop up a login window. Enter your NAS credentials and it will list all your NAS shared folders.
While using the Remote Desktop App its still kind of slow and the internet speed is still a fraction of what is available on the network.
Well there might be a number of reasons for it. What NAS are you running your VM off? What type of array (raid; if any)? Any SSDs in play? How much resources did you give to that VM? Whats the overall performance of that VM in idle?

Slow performance might be a part attributed to low resources, but win10 might be on doing something on their own thats killing your overall performance that might effect your net speed as well.

Strangely enough I could connect to the shared folders on the NAS where this virtual machine is running on when I created my first VM using Windows 10 home. I could mount the shared foldeds in explorer.

Now I created a new VM using Windos 10 Pro I cant'. Even when I turn off every firewall and enabled full guest access on the shared folder on the NAS its simply not showing.

Connecting trough the web browser is no problem.

As for performance I think its mostly a network issue. I am going to experiment by enabling an additional network interface and dedicate that one to the VM.

Hardware:
DS1517+
16GB Memory
2 X m2 SSD cards setup as RAID 1 cashing service

There is nothing else running on this NAS.
