Irritating Disk Access DS916+

Unread post by Fizzyade » Tue Aug 01, 2017 10:07 am

Running the latest release of DSM.

I've turned off all the packages on my DS916+ (to try and get to the bottom of this), all I have running is the default installed packages.

Universal Search is not enabled on my shares.

But, I get bursts of disk accesses which are driving me crazy!

In the task manager, I can see that the only thing seeming to make disk accesses is "DSM Internal Service" and when I expand that the only things in there which keep showing access are:

jbd2/md0-8
jbd2/dm-0-8

Keep seeing bursts of writes on these.

Any thoughts on what is happening?

I too have this problem on a brand new DS918+ with two IronWolf 10TB in raid1+btrfs ...
However, the problem seems to be on the rootfs for which synology uses ext4, hence the journal daemon (jbd2/md0-8) getting blamed for the disc access.

Ever since the fresh install I have been bothered with the rather loud clicking of the drives writing data every other second!
What are you doing to my drives Synology?! They are on 24/7 with this constant disc access, however small the chunks are, it is still writing continuously.

I have no search, no indexing, no downloads, no network file access ongoing and still even the Resource Monitor shows about 2-4 IOPS.

Fizzyade: Have you figured out what causes it yet? Heard anything from Synology support?

Dont have such issue on my 916+, but i use btrfs, i guess processes mentioned by you are ext4 related.
DS918+ (4GB RAM, 2x4TB SHR, 2x256GB read/write cache) business, DS916+(8GB RAM, 3x2TB SHR) home, DS213j(512MB RAM, 1x1 TB single, 1x 500GB single) off-site backup

Hi pgotze.
As I wrote, I'm also using btrfs on a raid1 for the data volume1 but Synology is still using ext4 for the root partition (system disc) which you can not change.

Code: Select all

$ mount
/dev/md0 on / type ext4 (rw,noatime,barrier,commit=60,data=ordered)
/dev/md2 on /volume1 type btrfs (rw,noatime,synoacl,nospace_cache,metadata_ratio=50,subvolid=257,subvol=/@syno)

Hi DeepT,

yes /dev/md0 is ext4 also in my config, rest 2 volumes are btrfs. Anyway i dont have this issue. I would open support ticket, if its persistent issue, that will not be hard to check for Synology.

Hi, I have the same problem on my DS1817+ running DSM 6.1.5. Did you find a solution to the disk access by jbd2?

Best regards - Angel.

What happens if you pull the network plug?
Please share if a reply was useful or how the issue was solved, it helps other DS users.

No, unfortunately I never really got to the root of it.
I traced it down to the journal of the system partition and could see the logging services, syslog-ng in particular. Stopping it definitely made a significant improvement. So I suspect over excessive logging is once cause.

It also helped remounting / with noatime and journal commit of 600.
But it still clicks too frequently.

Also tried pulling the network cable which didn't make any noticeable difference.

Sorry for the extremely late reply, but I forgot to subscribe for replies to the thread.

I occured this issue too, could you please explain the details of how to stop syslog-ng? I can't kill syslog-ng via "kill" command. Thanks

@qiuje, I definitely do not recommend having syslog-ng disabled other than during troubleshooting of the extraneous disc access.

syslog-ng is a service and can be started/stopped/disabled etc. via synology's service-control program:
synoservice --hard-stop syslog-ng
it is much like systemd systemctl. Be careful when stopping services as disabling them will cause them not to be started after a reboot and hard-stop will stop depending services.
