DS212j getting slow

Unread post by Gaunts Ghost » Wed Mar 22, 2017 2:24 pm

Hello

My current system is the DS212j running DSM 6.1-15047 Update 1
It feels like that the Diskstation is getting slower with each update. The big update from 5 to 6 seemed to be the biggest effect. I really don't like not updating since there are vulnerabilities fixes in some of the updates.

My guess is that the system is starting to show it's age and with each update that adds new features it bogs the system down even more.
But how are you guys' DS212j or similar system running? Are you starting to feel the age?

My DS211j was just updated to UP2 today and its true that its showing it age. Still I use it only to host some local media files and as a remote destination for hyper backup for my primary NAS. Also its pushing some data to the cloud. Along this its also a VPN server. With all those tasks it works just fine. True its not the fastest box, but it works for the past 7y just fine and since DSM 6 it got slower, but like you said security is something that has its cost.

Yeah maybe I am pushing it too much with Photo Station, Download Station, File Station and Audio Station.
Point is it still works. Web interface is just annoyingly slow :-)

FS and AS are not that demanding. DS on the other hand with multiple downloads will take its toll. PS is probably the most intensive app

I might get a new NAS soon and use the old DS212j as a backup destination.
Really want a 4 bay next time, but I think I will get the DS216+II instead for the X86 processor and probably 6TB drives
