CloudStation Can't Backup Program Files Folders on Windows 10

Unread post by GadgetBob » Sat Oct 15, 2016 3:05 am

I ran into a big problem with CloudStation. I program Crestron Home Automation Systems for Hundreds of Clients and one thing that is important is to be able to back up the Crestron Folders in the Program Files x86 Folder. It contains Databases of drivers as well as Custom written C++ Code and the like. The trouble is when I put cloud station on my Windows 10 Laptop it does not show the Program Files or Program Files x86 folder as even an option, I thought it might be a permissions thing but I can't seem to find what that permission is or what user Cloud Station is logging in as (I tried to change ownership of the folder to the current logged in user and system). Its really important that these files get backed up regularly since they are the only copies of uncompiled code that I have. Anyone have any answers or have experienced the same problem?

Cloudstation has a significant list of folder types, file types and lengths that it will not backup - they are excluded by design-

What version of CloudStation are you using? The help file for CloudStation will list out most of the exceptions and rules for the software-

Cloud Station Backup and Drive should not be used with program files or folders. Use different backup software for that. You're not required to use Cloud Station Backup at all as there's plenty of backup software that works with network storage.

It would be useful to have the option to store specific folders like Program Files, I mean why allow the Windows folder to be selected if not Program Files (and Program Files (x86)).

Oh by the way, if the Cloud Station Server isn't running, having the message come back and say, "Connection failed, please check your network settings" isn't useful, maybe suggest that the user checks the Cloud Station Server package needs to be running. Especially if you have selected the NAS from the drop down option.

Cloud Station Backup / Windows folders are missing...

Unread post by frankie666 » Sat Feb 25, 2017 10:26 am

Dear all,
With CSB I would like to include some files coming from Win 10 foldes (c:\ProgramData, c:\Programmes, etc...) but these folders are not listed in the source selection window in CSB.
Any reason for this ? Any clue to cope with this issue ?
Thanks a lot for your help.
Frank

Cloud Station Backup by default ignores those files and directories as they should not be included by the backup from their perspective.

However you can change this behavior by manipulating the configuration file of the application. On Windows go here:
C:\Users\YOUR USERNAME\AppData\Local\CloudStationBackup\CloudStation.app\conf

Open the file filter in a texteditor like Notepad++. Remove "Program Files" and similar stuff from all blacklists and save. If there are multiple filter files in that directory then adjust them all.

You should only do this if you know what you are doing. A missconfiguration may lead to the app being inoperable.

Hello Zabuza,

I tried your hint but unfortunately nothing happened. Have you an idea what I did wrong?

Thanks in advance.

Also tried editing the filter files (there were two) to delete references to Program Files (x64).
This had no effect.
Rather disappointed by this... why not me choose what I want to back up?

If tech could please address this I would appreciate the help.

A former post says that I should use a 3rd party backup. I'd rather not but If I must, how do I integrate this with the Synology?

This isn't a Cloud Station feature. Use Macrium Reflect Free and either backup the folders you want or create an image of the partition and push that to the NAS.

I use Cloud Station to synchronize files between my laptop and desktop computers allowing me to switch seamlessly between the two. This has worked very well and I'm trying to synchronize the ProgramData files for a few programs to synchronize the functionality. Being able to sync those ProgramData directories would be incredibly helpful. I've tried deleting the blacklist masks of ProgramData but to no avail. Any guidance would be appreciated.

The utility you mentioned backs up the folders, as do several other utilites. But I do not want to Backup, I want to SYNC.

Just got a satisfactory answer from Synology tech support as to why it doesn't sync /Program Files. Thank you Kyle.

Hello Mark,

The reason this limitation exists for the program files directory is because of the sheer number of files an number of changes per second that occur in that directory. It would use up most of the CPU on modern computers to scan the changes to make sure the change was not impacting it's sync folder. We exclude this folder from being allowed to sync for this reason. If you could, you would not be able to use your computer due to how slow it suddenly was.

In regards to the other issue you are having, you must first remove the sync task that is syncing something on the desktop before you can sync the desktop. Imagine if you synced a folder with one task and then synced the parent folder with another task. It could cause infinite loops. This is why you are getting that message. Please remove the other task before creating this new one.

Regards,
Kyle

I think this limitation is Extremely shortsighted.
For example. The most popular Administration software package in Sweden for small businesses is the various version of the Softwares from SPCS/VISMA. These save all data and settings within the installation folder in under /Program and /Program (x86) folders.
So I NEED regular easy sync over internet to my synology server, with great ease to use of the folders /Progam/SPCS/Administration and similar. Those few subfolders would not tax the backup system much at all.

If it weren't for this limitation the Cloudstation Backup would be all I needed. Make it possible to select subfolders with a lot of varnings and info at least. All other backup solutions fails on either ease of use or compatability with remote access to synology, so it really needs to be adressed.
