How to change the second drive from "mirror" to a storage one?

Unread post by st56304 » Mon Jul 02, 2018 10:39 am

Hi,

I have a DS215J with two drives (WD 1T). Currently, as per initial set up, drive 2 is a mirror of drive 1. How could I change this so drive 2 becomes a storage drive as well?

Thanks a lot!

Not possible. You have to start over. Copy your files off to a 3rd drive, then delete volume, and set up 2 basic volumes.

If you don't have a 3rd drive ...
1. Shut down NAS, remove one drive.
2. Restart NAS with one drive. Volume will be degraded. Delete volume/create basic volume.
3. Shutdown NAS. Reinstall second drive and restart NAS. You should be able to copy files from second drive (now degraded) to new basic volume. When that's complete, delete original volume and create second basic volume.

Good luck!

I have a question to above,
Ad2-
- after restart NAS with one drive, which one should be removed, the originally placed or that one which served as a copy?
- where should I create "basic volume". isn't SHR like a "basic volume" already?
- when I leave one drive in a storage and will delete and then create basic volume, I will not loose my data previously stored?
Ad3- after whole operation my NAS system and apps will stay as they were before? or will I loose all of my previous NAS settings?

thanks,

- it doesn't matter which drive you remove, they're a mirrored pair
- SHR is not a basic volume. It's SHR. You could make an SHR volume with one drive though if you want to - it makes no difference.
- you won't lose your data because a) it's on the other disk that you're removed and b) YOU HAVE A BACKUP OF YOUR DATA RIGHT?
- settings will remain, apps will be destroyed.

thanks,

so
-I removed drive, it became degraded
- shutdown and reinstall other drive,
- created volume with second storage pool,
- now, Im copying the files from the 1st disk to 2nd disk.

As it will take some time, one thing came thrugh my mind.
After reinserting other (2nd) drive, and started NAS, on this second drive there was comment "Partition failed".
It didn't interfer with creating second volume where Im copying the files at the moment.
But Im wondering when I finish with copying files and create 2nd volume on the 1st disk from where Im now copying (degraded), after restart what will happen?
how system will know which disk is a basic one? I believe there are some hidden files on the current drive that are use for system purposes which I wont copy. what with them?
am I missing some step? Im trying to understand whole process, so I wont lose any data.

do not restart. you can erase drive 1 after copy file. DSM can see what RAID is use from drive when you boot so it no issue in future.

but if I wont do anything with the Disk1, then it will stay "Degraded" all the time.

After you have copied your files over to the new drive, you can blow away the volume on disk 1 and create your second basic volume on disk 1.

you need delete volume. you not need restart to delete volume.

I tried, but I cannot. Synology says that I need to stop and uninstall packages like chat, moments, video etc....
"operation failed due to the following reasons:
Volume 1,
System services User home, music, photo station, video,
Shared folders chat homes music photo video
chat....
packages...."

Do I have to stop them all manually? Is there any method for this?
Im trying to manually stop the apps but it takes ages for each.
Additionaly how about "system services", those I wont uninstall. Will synology let me to remove the volume1, even if I uninstall all packages?

You need to stop and uninstall the packages like it says. It's not optional.

If you don't see an option to uninstall a package, it cannot be uninstalled and you can ignore it.

ok. I've done it. However instead of uninstalling Ive moved folders (shared folders) to other Drive.

Thanks for support.

A shared folder isn't a package. :)

Glad you got it sorted out.
