Reuse old DS as expansion unit

Unread post by wanderley » Thu Dec 07, 2017 10:12 pm

I am getting a new DS918+ soon to replace my DS411+II. I am wondering how to best use the old device.
I was wondering if I could use the DS411 as an expansion unit? Or how do you take advantage of an old unit?

A RAID NAS is not a backup device - just a reasonably reliable way to store information. You can stick as much storage as you need in your DS918+ so I'd use the old NAS as a backup.

I have a second NAS (see sig) which I use for backup. It's stored in a separate, secure location on the premises. I run Hyper Backup (main) and Hyper Backup Vault (backup) to keep a backup and history of the really important stuff.
DS412+, SHR with 3 x WD RED (3TB, 3TB, 4TB), 1 x SSD (using 120GB of 480GB for cache)
DS216j for remote backup, SHR with 2 x WD RED (3TB)

No, but in File Station (DS918+) you can map shares of the old unit.
