DS216j dead, blinking orange light, LAN light off

Unread post by dgriff » Thu Jan 04, 2018 3:33 pm

Hi, I just noticed that my DS216j hasn't done a Time Machine backup in a month. I can no longer connect to it via a web browser, it doesn't come on automatically in the morning any more, when I turn it on the disk lights go green but the status light blinks orange and the LAN light doesn't come on at all. I use a ASUS USB-AC56 Dual-band Wireless-AC1300 USB 3.0 Wi-Fi Adapter and that seems to be flashing blue normally although I haven't tried it with anything else.

If the connection to the network was down would that cause the orange flashing light, or does the combination of both that and LAN light off indicate something more serious?

Thanks,

Dave

synoindex_mgr: share_update.c:34 Failed to dlopen [libsynoshare.so], errno=No such file or directory.

I posted another topic earlier about flashing orange light. Since then I have connected my DS216j directly to the router, logged in via ssh and done a diff of a successful boot in /var/log/messages with the first failure. These appear to be the significant first errors:
2017-12-08T07:01:14+00:00 synology synoindex_mgr: share_update.c:34 Failed to dlopen [libsynoshare.so], errno=No such file or directory.
2017-12-08T07:01:14+00:00 synology synoindex_mgr: synoidx_folder.c:156 SLIBShareUpdate failed[900]
I can't see these mentioned anywhere apart from one place where someone had been messing with packages. I haven't touched anything so unsure why this suddenly started happening?

BTW I thought I would try and save my configuration with synoconfbkp to restore later, but that doesn't work either:
root@synology:~# synoconfbkp
synoconfbkp: error while loading shared libraries: /lib/libsynoshare.so.6: invalid ELF header
root@synology:~# ls -l /lib/libsynoshare.so.6

I managed to fix manually as follows:

1) downloaded DSM_DS216j_15217.pat (on my laptop)
2) tar xvf DSM_DS216j_15217.pat
3) tar xzvf hda1.tgz usr/lib/libsynoshare.so.6
4) scp libsynoshare.so.6 me@192.168.0.24:/lib (had to dummy up a home directory for myself first as no volumes mounted)
5) reboot - still failed, this time with libsynopkg.so.1
6) repeat above for libsynopkg.so.1

then it was ok.

This is all very odd. I read some vague reference somewhere to these files being deliberately corrupted?

DSM time bomb?

Unread post by dgriff » Sat Jan 06, 2018 10:05 am

I have reason to believe that my corrupted copy of /lib/libsynoshare.so.6 may have been caused by a “DSM time bomb”. I have a DS216j that has not been modified in any way and was set to apply automatic updates. On Dec 7 last year it stopped working due to a bad ELF header in /lib/libsynoshare.so.6. It appears that there may be some kind of time bomb that causes this to happen but it is very poorly documented. I would like to know why it happened and what action I can take to prevent it happening again. I paid a lot of money for this device plus disks and am not happy about this.

Hi Guys, wondering if anyone can help.. not sure if this problem is related.

I have a DS216j, which, when I turn it on, everything starts up but the light flashes orange.
From what I read, this relates to a HDD failure - I took the HDD out, ran manufacturer test and everything passed 100% ok.

THe problem is that I cannot see the device on the network.

a bit of History....

I bought the device about a year ago, set it up at home using a mac. Everything worked just fine. Setup mobile access to pictures and was able to use everything perfectly.
A few months later, I sold my place and shut everything down.. and everything was off line for quite some time.
A few weeks ago I put it back online (for various reasons, I couldn't do this earlier)
In the mean time I obviously changed my incoming internet connection.
I kept the same ISP but my Incoming IP was now different.
My internal network was 192.168.0.x and I made sure that it remained like that when I got the new connection at my new place.
I used the Same Desktop PC to try and access the DS but to no avail.
What's even more strange is that I cannot see the device on my router either.

Suggestions where that it was the HDD - i fully tested this and I am 100% that the HDD is ok.
I'm not sure why I cannot see it anywhere, not even the Synology assistant picks it up.

Any suggestion, advice?

p.s I am a noobie on the forum so I need to create a new post or place this in a more appropriate please, please let me know.

Thanks
Tim

Blinking orange light has nothing to do with disk failure. And the device isnt dead at all. It simply implies that there is no installed DSM found (of course the reason COULD be a failing disk). Use Synology Assistant and follow the wizard to reinstall it. This procedure is designed not to touch your data partition.
However of course it is always strongly recommended to have a backup available....

Ditto account creation. Thank you very much!

Also: by using '$synoservice --restart DSM' in CLI you don't have to restart.

Any idea what's causing this? Could it be a package install?

Unfortunately it crashed again. Got an admin webconsole for a few minutes but after posting here it died. I'll try a full restart.
