Searching shares with OS X spotlight

Postby fuzzio » Fri Jan 18, 2013 8:56 pm

Hi,

I love our new Synology NAS but...

I have read various posts here about searching a Synology share with OS X spotlight search (from a mac)
and as far as I can tell this does not automatically work as of yet correct?
(or at least doing a spotlight search for content within files, say text string that shows up in Word file... etc.)

This is REALLY too bad because I would really love this feature.
Before we were running a mac os x server where this actually works.

Basically I have found that activating indexing via terminal seems to work
---------
cd /Volumes
mdutil shareName -i on
mdimport -Vp ./shareName
---------
where shareName = name of your share

While this seems to work it does take forever (currently my mac is telling me 34 hours)
due to the amount of files on some of our shares.

Is there a better way to do this?
Is Synology planning to implement something to help with this?
Or did I miss the one checkbox in the Admin pages that allows me to turn this function on? :)

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Me again :)

No suggestions?

there is got to be a better of doing this?
Can anyone point me in the right direction? and Hopefully not to the exit :)

I have read one can hook up the NAS to mac and then share via the mac and then this works...
But not really ideal.

Any plans by Synology to implement a work-around or add this feature?
Or is the spotlight search a patented os x feature?

Came here looking for an answer to the same thing. I had thought the issue was the EXT4 formatting requirement (why the heck can it only support NTFS with external drives?!?). I'm trying to figure out if something like Leap or Yep (from Ironic software) will index the remote drive.

This is the same question I'm looking for an answer to.
I have a MBP and use Leap/Yep and would love it to work on/with my Synology NAS.

Here as one more who needs this feature. I'd like to use these for many TB of work data, but not being able to search is more than a small issue.

Can any Mac user confirm that Spotlight is working? It was fine for me 2 months ago. What I changed since then:

DSM 4.2 -> DMS 4.3
JBOD Volume -> RAID 1 Volume

Still same OSX 10.6, still connecting with AFP. All tricks to force Spotlight indexing do not show any effect. Strange enough the "mdimport" command works, showing me all files indexed. However in the end no file can be found with Spotlight :(

So the lucky Mac User with a working spotlight can you list your configuration?

thanks!

For those who are still interested in Spotlight search on your NAS drive:

I played with the command line mdutil switching indexing on/off , forcing manual indexing, all with no success.

However when I switched indexing off with mdutil -i off /Volume/xxx suddenly a Spotlight query for a MP3 filename on my music volume returned results! Apparently with indexing off Spotlight is at least able to search for simple filenames.

I'm certainly interested in a solution to this issue.
Having 40TB of unsearchable data is unsatisfactory. :(

Thought I posted this. Try FoxTrot Pro. Indexes very well!
