AFP Share dissapears / Must restart Nas to get working again

Postby sstcomp » Fri Dec 21, 2012 2:34 am

Hi All,

Nas information:
Model name: DS212j
Current DSM Version: DSM 4.1-2668
DSM date: 201/12/11

My problem began recently when an iMac running OSX 10.8 was introduced to the network (the only mac on the network). I wanted to use AFP or as Synology refer to Mac File Service to do some backups.

I have the Firewall permissions set and Mac file service enabled which works as expected.

The problem I have is after I see the share it disappears not long after. I am able to connect when it is present and work as expected, yet when I return to connect to the share later in the day it is gone.

I can resolve the issue by turning Mac file service off, applying the setting and then enabling it again.

This is not an ideal solution by any means. After a short time the share is once again gone.

Has anyone else experienced this issue and or know of a fix for it?

Your time is greatly appreciated.

Would love to know if anyone else is having problems with this. Some input from a Synology guru would also be nice.

Hi,

I have the same problem and it has been since Lion. Before that, I didn't have these issues. Yesterday I installed OS X Mountain Lion clean. Still have the issue, and it's a bit worse now, as Time Machine now also says it can't backup because the disk isn't available. That bit was working fine till yesterday's upgrade (you just had to set up the backup while the NAS was visible but TM used to work even when it wasn't visible anymore).

I still think this may be an OS X issue, perhaps related to my particular setup/hardware. I have a brother MFC-9840CDW and since going to Mountain Lion, my Mac will sometimes say the printer isn't available. Rebooting the Mac fixes the issue. Power cycling the printer doesn't.

I also found I had to add the NAS in the /etc/hosts file to see it by name.local. The NAS has a fixed IP address, not using DHCP. Mac is on DHCP. NAS and Mac are wired to router.

I have:
Synology DS409+ on DSM 4.1-2668
Mac Pro 2008 on 10.8.2
NetGear WNDR3600 router on Firmware V1.0.16.98NA

Thank you

I don't have this problem, but I also have my computers set to never sleep...

If you continue to have problems, may I suggest that you set your Mac to never sleep for a day or two, and see if the problem persists..

If it doesn't, you can continue to have your Mac NOT sleep, or the other option would be to dismount the share when you know it will be going to sleep.

Hi,

I have my Mac set to not sleep. I have also tried to keep a share from the NAS mounted on the Mac. I have turned off LittleSnitch, all to no avail. I am now trying to not have the Synology HDD's hibernate and I have turned of IPv6 on the NAS. WIll see if any of that helps.

The "shared server" did stay visible for more than 20 minutes (HDD hibernation time) so I doubt that's it. I am not sure after how much time it disappears. BTW, as long as the "shared server" is visible (in the sidebar of finder), I don't need to have the name.local in /etc/hosts either.

Also, to get the share name back to being visible in finder, I need to reboot both the NAS and the Mac. Just rebooting one doesn't solve the problem.

I'll be able to tell how long it takes for the share to disappear by paying attention to the Time Machine backup times. That will tell me to within an hour. I'll also do that and see if the time to fail or time of fail is somewhat consistent.

Any other thoughts/ideas most welcome!

Thanks
PS My router is a WNDR3700 not 3600.

Hi,

Solved!

It was the HDD sleeping on the Synology that made the NAS disappear from my Mac.

After I turned HDD sleep off (set hibernation time to none), my NAS did not disappear from Finder or Time Machine for more than 24 hours. I then turned the HDD hibernate time back to 20 minutes and within a coupe of hours I noticed that the NAS was gone from finder and my Time Machine backup had failed.

I guess that solves the mystery for me, even though I don't much like never letting the HDD's on the NAS hibernate.

Thanks

Hi,

For the sake of completeness: Ultimately my problem turned out to be my router. The NetGear WNDR3700. In Lan Setup, I had to set the Rip Version. It is by default "Disabled" and I set it to "Rip_1". Now, even with the drives set to hybernate, my Synology no longer disappears. Nor does my Brother wireless printer become mysteriously unavailable.

Thanks

Thanks for coming back and posting the ultimate solution to your problem. I've struggled with a Synology NAS in a mixed environment too. Hadn't had this specific problem, but I'm also on an old version of DSM, and about to finally update, so who knows, this may have saved me a chunk of time.

Thanks again!
