MacOS 10.12 Sierra AFP Errors
All:
I'm having some problems accessing my Synology NAS from a Mac Mini using AFP. Lots of errors. Causes iTunes and Photos to hang repeatedly as they try to access their libraries on my DS216+.
Anyone else seeing this on their Macs?

Re: MacOS 10.12 Sierra AFP Errors
We are seeing the exact same thing. If an app writes to a afp share, the finder will beach ball and eventually crash.

Re: MacOS 10.12 Sierra AFP Errors
I've opened a ticket with Apple and Synology. I've been talking to Apple, but not the Synology folks yet. An SMB share works, but then you run into the damn file and folder naming conventions. Right now I hope the media on my Synology NAS isn't corrupt. It doesn't appear to be damaged, but this kind of crap makes me what to go back to attached mirrored storage and kick this crap to the curb. I need reliable data storage devices.

Re: MacOS 10.12 Sierra AFP Errors
Well after thinking about this I've decided I'm done. I'm going to erase and install MacOS 10.11 onto my Mini again. I don't think waiting on Apple is a good idea. This is serious bug and I don't expect a fix anytime soon!
Re: MacOS 10.12 Sierra AFP Errors
exact same problem.. Works if i specify SMB connection but my finder sidebar links to shared devices (e.g.) make it hang. Cant open files on NAS
Re: MacOS 10.12 Sierra AFP Errors
I've honestly had nothing but hell in my life after moving my external storage to a NAS. I've decided to go back to directly attached storage in some kind of RAID configuration. Selling my NAS and never ever looking back again. It's clear Apple changed something is MacOS 10.12 Sierra with AFP and how it works. It's not easy to go from AFP to SMB because some file or folder names are compatible with SMB - which to me means data corruption of a sort. I think I'll get an external drive that is USB 3.x or Thunderbolt. I just need to see what Apple has up its sleeve regarding the use of USB-C and those new connectors.
Re: MacOS 10.12 Sierra AFP Errors
I updated my Mac to 10.12. Sierra and updated Pages, Numbers and Keynote afterwards to the latest versions.
So far so good, everything running normal.
But unfortunately saving a Numbers file via AFP on a local Synology NAS (DS1815+, latest DSM) caused the application to crash and kicked all connections to shared folders.
Saving on the local HDD is no problem at all.
Then I tried to figure out whether thats a single problem with AFP and killed the AFP file service on the NAS to only start the SMB2 service.
No problem to save on the NAS via SMB.
I tried to save a numbers document on the NAS via AFP from another Mac. This time with an older version of numbers (3.6.2) but on a freshly updated OS X (10.12. Sierra) and it causes the same crash of numbers and all connections to the NAS.
Therefore: It seems to be a problem with OS X Sierra and the AFP server of the current Synology DSM (6.0.2-8451 Update 1).

Which apps are causing this behaviour?!

Re: MacOS 10.12 Sierra AFP Errors
I just installed Sierra 10.12.1 (beta 1) and time machine is back up and running.
Re: MacOS 10.12 Sierra AFP Errors
Same here. macOS Sierra seems to crash afp while writing to afp shares under some circumstances. This occurs with latest DSM version (DSM 6.0.2-8451 Update 1). Seems to be the client site, because hard off the mac and reboot solves the problem (for a while). This issue occurs for me while opening photos library from an afp share. Other things are running normally. SMB is working too. My shares are mapped via auto_fs.
Note:
TimeMachine is working normally at all?!

Re: MacOS 10.12 Sierra AFP Errors
Since I have installed macos Sierra, NAS reads and writes MUCH slower than it used to be (about 10x worse) using AFP.
Hope for a fix - but I already know it won't appear anytime soon.

Re: MacOS 10.12 Sierra AFP Errors
Apple had me try a fresh clean install of Sierra to test because they thought software I had on the previous version of macOS was the issue. The test proved that this isn't the case. A fresh clean install of Sierra and it still exhibited the errors I was seeing with AFP while trying to connect to my Photos library.
Please note that Apple does not official support SHARING a Photos or iTunes library on a NAS - the key word is sharing in the sense that two or more people are trying to access the same library. In my case only one user and one computer (a Mac Mini) accesses either library. I don't share photos, but my iTunes library is accessible via cloud services and the stuff you can set up for home sharing in iTunes. Since iTunes is the transfer mechanism I cannot say it's being shared in the way Apple doesn't support. Since no one else directly accesses the library as far as I know.
Bottomline I'm blaming Apple right now for the AFP problems. I'd also like to note that someone using another brand of NAS is seeing the same problems we are seeing with our devices from Synology.

Re: MacOS 10.12 Sierra AFP Errors
I would rather blame Synology:
I started file sharing via AFP on one of my Macs (OS X 10.11), connected with the Sierra machine on that one via afp:// and saved a numbers file, a jpg and a TextEdit file without any Problems. So it is not only about AFP in general.

All this proves that AFP between Apple devices is fine, which makes total sense because it's not using an open-source version of the protocol (Netatalk). If other storage vendors are experiencing issues then it points to Apple because they either aren't releasing the API or allowing the full capabilities of it to be available with Netatalk.
Not to mention there's practically no reason to use AFP anymore with Apple clearly trying to shut the door on it in favor of SMB, but keep getting stopped by people who want to keep using AFP for whatever reason. The only issue that could come up is people using invalid characters that only AFP supports for whatever god-awful reason.
Re: MacOS 10.12 Sierra AFP Errors
I am not experiencing AFP connection slow speeds. I just updated to macOS 10.12 my MacbookPro 2012 model and my DS214play is running DSM6.0.1
I mounted an AFP share point specifically and then downloaded a 1.5GB file to my desktop. Download speeds varied but ranged between 300-800Mbps. I uploaded the same file to my DS214play and upload speeds ranged from 200-500Mbps. Thats not slow.
