So does that end up connecting through AFP or SMB?

The same problem with DS-414 and release of 10.11 on iMac (27", mid 2011)
Protocol: AFP
Just after restart all works fine, but after several minutes I can't login to DiskStation in finder.
There the error in log: "SDSharePointBrowser::handleOpenCallBack returned 60"
Connecting via ⌘K works, it offers to me a list of shares and mounts them.
TimeMachine works only when I manually force it to make a backup, in automatic mode it does't see backup volume

Same problem on my Sinology DS212 with an old DSM (4.3-3827 update7).
Some discussion on apple forum : https://discussions.apple.com/thread/72 ... 0&tstart=0
But still no solution
Re: Apple OS X El Capitan Beta (10.11) DS Error w/Finder
If you have problems accessing your Diskstation page, try to access it using a Windows computer, somehow is more easyer to setup and disable afp. I managed to do it using El Capitan but if you have problems just use a windows PC and save your changes.
Re: Apple OS X El Capitan Beta (10.11) DS Error w/Finder
I get the same Error when connecting to a DS1813+ (NAS at work) via AFP, but it works with my DS1511+ via AFP at home, with the same laptop. Both running DSM 5.2-5592.
Re: Apple OS X El Capitan Beta (10.11) DS Error w/Finder
same for me.
oddly an OS X admin account can connect to the ds (also a synology admin a/c) but a standard user account cannot.
ds 214play 5.2-5644 on 10.11.1
tried smb + afp
it does sound like 10.11.2 is needed to fix whatever is going on. i took some wireshark traces of both smb & afp and you can see a login request happening and this gets closed down quickly.

Re: Apple OS X El Capitan Beta (10.11) DS Error w/Finder
Same problem, OSX 10.11.1 DS713+ DSM 5.2
I find a DANGEROUS <read dangerous> turnaround:Options->External Access-> Router configuration->Add AFP (port 548TCP).
Read, I do this just to figure why can't connect, this exposes the NAS AFP service to the Internet traffic, If you want to try, after this you need to reset your mac's network connection, then all the shares and timemachine comeback, but this is an dangerous configuration, you should disable or disconnect your router's WAN if you really want AFP working

Re: Apple OS X El Capitan Beta (10.11) DS Error w/Finder
It was (hope so) finally fixed in 10.11.2
All previous recommendations has a temporary effect and doesn't solve the problem.
Obviously it was a problem in Finder or Network sharing layer.
Shame on you, Apple! You was my last hope in the world of unstable computers and operating systems

Re: Apple OS X El Capitan Beta (10.11) DS Error w/Finder
SOLUTION THAT WORKED FOR ME:
Had the same problem after upgrading to El Capitan, and was banging my head against the wall trying to Google the solution.
Even spent about an hour with an Apple Support person on the live chat who had no idea how to solve this. My Disk Station model is DS211j
I finally solved the problem by doing to the following:
- Logged on my Disk Station via Synology Assistant
- Went to Control Panel -> File Services -> Win/Mac/NFS tab
- Un-ticked “Enable Windows file service”
- Ticked “Enable Mac File service”
- Clicked “Apply” at the bottom
- In Finder on Mac, in the Menu went Go -> Connect to Server
- Under Server Address typed: afp://DiskStation.local (your NAS / Disk Station name may be different from my “DiskStation”)
- Entered username / password for Disk Station
And it finally connected !!!
So basically it seems like the SMB protocol connection became totally broken in El Capitan.
Also it seems like I needed to totally disable the Windows / SMB protocol for the Mac / APF protocol to work.
If I leave Windows / SMB protocol enabled in NAS it somehow kept interfering, not connecting and messing up my AFP connection.
Downside of this solution: it seems I need to reconnect every time after a Mac restart now. Haven't tried with Time Machine.

did you manage to resolve the issue?
i am facing the same issue of the admin account working but the standard account cannot.
Re: Apple OS X El Capitan Beta (10.11) DS Error w/Finder
We solved this issue by doing 2 things:
1. Disabled all Mac clients from writing .DS_Store files to network drives: defaults write com.apple.desktopservices DSDontWriteNetworkStores -bool true
2. Deleted all .DS-Store files on the Synology using SSH.
That cleared this issue up for us.

I am not an expert - can you be more specific what to do?
Thanks!
Thanks!
