There was a problem connecting to the server DiskStation

Unread post by dstinson » Thu Mar 01, 2018 8:48 pm

So I get the error message at random times "There was a problem connecting to the server DiskStation" and what I believe is happening is that my Mac is looking for my old DS. I have since replaced this old unit and the error message is correct, it's not connecting cause it's no longer there and has been replaced with a newer model. Everything is fine with the new unit, is there anyway to force my Mac to 'forget' my old DS? I can click through the error message and it eventually goes away, more of an annoyance then anything. thanks

How are you trying to access your NAS? Also is your new unit on the same IP address as your old one?

IP address is different and I am accesing it through a mapped folder on my Mac (smb://DiskStation/MyDocuments). The old share is removed from my finder too.

Guessing you have to authenticate as well. Could it be that you have some logins in Keychain that are refering to the old NAS?

I am having a similar situation, where I have been using Time Machine for years now with my Synology station, and now, suddenly it gives me this message:

Time machine can not connect with the backup disk. The operation couldn’t be completed. (OSStatus error 64.)
I did check Keychain access and have some old information for the same unit, should these old ones be deleted? This has never been a problem or the system got confused with this.
Any ideas?

Thanks,
Germán.

Well it could be, but the error is too generic. My guess is that you can try with a keychain accounts and clean up, to begin with, but if that happens again you will have to troubleshoot further.

Have you update you Mac recently? Maybe there was a change that doesn't fit well with TM sparse image on the syno side? Start with keychain and take it from there.

Hi, thank you for the suggestions.

I have cleaned up keychain access. No luck.

I realize now my machine can not see the syno, so the problem somehow is not exclusive to TM. My wife's computer has been backing up flawlessly to the same unit, and our credentials are identical.

I am running the latest update of High Sierra 10.13.4.

So I now realize it is my machine not being able to connect to the unit at all, I am able to ping the unit, which makes me more curious as of to why my machine can't see it. Any other ideas?

Thank you.

pinging the nas is one thing sure but that is not a garantee that you have a working scenario. Try and telnet your nas using port 445 to see if SMB traffic is working as it should.

Are you running static or dhcp IP address on both the nas and your computer?
