Audio Station stops playing in the middle of songs

Unread post by NickDeGraeve » Tue Aug 29, 2017 8:56 am

At work I use Audio Station via the DSM in the browser to listen to music from my Diskstation at home.

Everything used to be fine but since a few weeks playback is sometimes halted during songs.

This is what have found out so far:
- it happens to no specific song; the same songs play sometimes all the way through
- it happens at no specific point in the song, but mostly between ca. 1/3 and ca. 2/3 in
- clicking pause and play again doesn't help
- dragging the progress indicator forward or backward doesn't help
- when skipping to the next song, that one just starts
- when skipping back to the previously halted song, it then plays through the end
- playback just resumes after several minutes
- it seems to occur more frequently the last couple of days

I have a DS214+ with all the latest updates. I use QuickConnect.

Any idea what's wrong?
How can I debug this issue best? Any logs I need to check, on the DS or on my PC? Should I use some network monitoring tool (eg Wireshark) and how do I use it?

Thanks in advance.

Of the bat I would say network connection problems (your ISP where your NAS is hosted or from the location you are streaming), network bandwidth saturated (again your local or from the location you are streaming from) or your NAS is spiking at some other tasks that reflects like an interrupt of that song (maybe your volume and/or drives are doing something intensive).

One way to have a look is that while you are streaming music open up resource monitor and have an overview of cpu/ram/network/hdd/volume open. As soon as it starts to lag out have a look and see if there are some major spikes on HW layer that might point in that direction.

Regarding you network, not really sure you will be able to catch any specific problems. You could for exmp try and ping from a command line your quickconnect address and see if there are some packet drops, especially during song interrupts.

Also be sure to check if your network connection (you ISP connection where your NAS is) hasn't dropped and reconnected and that it also reflected as an interrupt. Considering you are using QC and not a ddns service your are using more hops to get to your NAS and are routing your traffic longer, so there might be a hiccup on QC side as well or ISPs that data needs to travel through.

Best way to be sure is to stream locally 1st via audio station, just to be sure that NAS is no the problem. Then add complexity on top of that like remote streaming.

Just a few ideas to start with.

Ok, I have finally got the time for a followup.

Things I have checked:
  • the problem doesn't happen on my LAN, only when I'm at work
no package loss at all when pinging during outage
it isn't a problem with CPU load or memory; neither on the NAS nor on the PC there aren't any noticible spikes
I kept a log the past week and the situation is even worse than I realised:
  • the average play time is only 8min with a low of 1min (!) and a high of 18min
the average stop time is 36min with a low of 28min and a high of 53min
In passing I talked to one of the sys admins at work and as far as he knows nothing has changed that would cause the recent problems.
If I tell him my IP address, the ports and protocol, he'll check the logs.

On my router I have ports 1900 (UDP) en 5001 (UDP & TCP) forwarded. Is that correct? Is 1900 even necessary? And what protocol dus AudioStation use, TCP or UDP?

Well by the looks of it you have an internet connection (bandwidth) problem. Your upload speed is either 2 slow or on your receiving side you have some slow traffic happening. This can be from various reasons, but if you are trying to listen to your song lists at work, there might be some QoS (quality of service) prioritization on that end. It might be the reason you have such poor experience

I have exactly the same problem, since about a week or so ago. I have a DS213j. I've made no changes to the set up in this period, and I find it unlikely that bandwidth is the problem.

Same with me. I can't seem to play music reliably for more than 10 - 15 mins without it randomly stopping. Internet radio does the same (so nothing to do with encoding). In my case, I'm playing to external USB speakers. I've tried uninstalling / reinstalling DS Audio without success.

Does Synology now include built-in obsolescence like Apple? I was really happy with my 213J until this year when several of the apps stopped working reliably. It had been rock solid previously and I had recommended Synology products to others on the basis of my good experience. I'd be tempted to turn off automatic updates to stop further degradation in performance if it were not for the required security patches.

I too have a 213j, but I'm not seeing this driving around and listening to my phone/DS Audio. I did notice occasional dropouts. I'm not sure yet whether this is a buffer or source issue. I plan to check that out next week.

So that doesn't help you much other than to say it's not a universal problem with the 213j/Audio Station combo. FWIW I connect via https and am on DSM 6.1.4-15217 Update 5.

With the new year I decided to try using it again. And what do you know, I seems to work as it should. It's now 2 weeks and I haven't got a single interruption.
At work and at my home the infrastructure hasn't changed. I did ave some DSM updates in the passed months. Maybe that fixed it?

Anyway I'm going to mark this topic as solved. Maybe the other people who have similar issues should start a new topic?

Audio Station stops playing in the middle of songs

This is a continuation of https://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.php?t=134753 which was closed by the initial author. In my case, the issue most certainly remains open.

In essence, I can't get my 213j to play more than a couple of songs without stopping. Sometimes it will play less than 1 song, sometimes as many as 3. It stops in the middle of songs rather than specifically at the end of one.

I'm playing to speakers via a USB interface, although this was rock solid up until some time last year.

Same issue here with DS Audio. Really annoying as I listen to a lot of podcasts with long track lengths and they almost always get cut off in the middle. When I start playing a track it starts buffering the rest of the track ahead of time, which is correct behavior, but it's stops buffering somewhere in the middle of the track and never restarts the buffering as the track continues to play. When it gets to the end of the data it's already buffered it just stops playing the entire playlist.

I have the same problem. It occurred first after reconfiguring my WLAN (I moved the router from the top floor to the ground floor and the satellite vice versa). Before that, it had worked for months without any problems. The network is even more stable and reliable now than it was before. The problem does not occur when I stream music via Google Play music. It occurs only with the DS ausio app and also when I play music stored on the Diskstation, so it is clearly not an internet bandwidth problem. I am using a Chromecast-based multiroom speaker configuration. When the music stops, the speakers go to standby mode. I am very annoyed because I ripped all my CDs to the diskstation and put them into archive storage and now I cannot listen to a single one without constant drops.
