Cant get Remote Folder working between two NAS

Unread post by Wolfseye » Mon Mar 12, 2018 10:55 am

Hi guys,

i am not really into most of the things you can do with a Synology NAS, considering I only used it to store my important Data (recordings from Camera, Photos, music, documents and stuff like that) the last 4 years on my old DS414. I know there is a million other and more professional things that can be done, but i never needed it for that. Anyways, recently my DS414 behaved a bit strange (which it never had before in 4 years), plus I needed more space anyways, so I purchased the DS187+ a couple days ago.

I wanted to do the System fresh from scratch.

Butt of course I wanted to copy things from my old HDDs of the DS414 into the new and bigger drive (s) on the DS1817+. So I read about remote folder, something I havent done before. Never needed it. I read the official FAQ concerning remote folder, but its not working for me. If i get that correct, for example I mount a Remote Folder (from the DS414) in one of my Shared folders on the new DS1817+, and connect them. Is that correct ?

Because whenever I try that, I get the following error.

Code: Select all

https://i.imgur.com/v0MPKOT.png
Which translated basically means:
Error with connection on Remote Folder. Please make sure the other Server is reachable via CIFS.
I stuck to the original documentation i found about that whole topic.

What did I do wrong ? I googled a little bit, found similiar posts but they were never 100% like i have the issue. There was some about SMB settings as well, but I really dont know what the issue is.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for this noob question. :(

Well, as it turns out it seems that it was an issue with SMB. Because of Shared folders with Windows 10, i changed the Minimum SMB version to SMB2 back then. Which it seems must be set on both NAS to SMB1 for Remote Folder to work.
I cant say that it works fast, but it works now.

Are there other ways that are faster ?

The use for Remote Folders is pretty much to be able to share one NAS's data trough the other NAS for end-users. But the data remains as they are. You could probably copy the data from within the File Station.

Perhaps you should consider using Cloud Stations to sync the shared folders data between the NAS'ses, make sure its mirrored on both devices. Once that is done you can decom your old NAS.

Does it work faster with Cloud Sync or is it just a less tedious copy & paste than through file manager ?

Wolfseye - when you say your transfer is slow using it via a remote folder. What speeds are we talking about here and how much data is in question? Also are we talking about a large number of small files or what?

Well, i mean between 60 & 80 MB/sec and files between 200 MB and over 10 GB. Its mixed up, but most file size is in that range. I thought Link aggregation would help, set that up on both NAS and my Cisco Switch, but fron what I see and read, that doesnt help at all to make it faster.

Well considering that you are getting into 80MB/s could mean that your drives (and array setup) on your NAS boxes could be the bottle neck. Also your network switch or router could be as well.

LAG setup will not help you in this cas that’s true and you will still max out at 1Gbit. Multiple connections from multiple clients would have this benefit but 1:1 transfers will not.

My Switch (Cisco SG-300-28) has all 1GB connections, and my router in this case is on the other end, which is not between the NASes or Switch. My drives are WD Reds.

So I dont know what the issue would be.

btw, it occasionally goes up to 120 whenever i use two copy processes at the same time.

Before I did the link aggregation on my Switch via a Tutorial on Youtube, the guy there (at least on the side of the Switch end) ment, to not use Jumbo frames. Is that wrong, or do I need to set it on the NAS also ? From what I read so far, the way I want to speed up the data transfer between two NAS, isnt really going to increase much with LAG anyways. What could Jumbo frames increase for me ? SOrry for stupid questions, but I am not good with that sorta stuff. ;)

I didn't say they would, just wondered if you have messed around with those at all. Its a bit odd that multiple copy tasks are actually saturating your lan and not a single one.

Do you have any QoS configured anywhere (on your switch maybe)?
