CS-406 (518) crashed the raid5 volume - data lost- need help

Unread post by Stussy-23 » Tue Dec 11, 2007 2:25 pm

Hi Forum,
I need urgend help because the CS-406 with FW 518 crashed the volume (Raid 5 with 4x SAMSUNG HD401LJ HDD)
The CS-406 is complaining about two of the four HDD's?
Rebooted ...different HDD's were effected ?
First time HDD 2 and 3 and now 1 and 4 bad status.
The repair option is greyed out, I guess because of the fact that two HDD's are effected...

Before I updated to 518 last week the CS-406 was ok for app. 10 month.
Now I had the first crash wich effect data lost ????????

bloody hell what a day

What can I do to recover / repair the volume to save the data somewere else?

Many many many thanks
Tom

Before trying to do anything I would very advise you to submit a support ticket and let the synology team have a look into your system.

If they dont find a solution then you can try to connect your HDs to a linux machine (Ubuntu or something else) and hope that at least som data can be restored.

Hi.

First of all read the post I wrote some days ago http://www.synology.com/enu/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5923

You will discover you are NOT the only one who had problems/data loss when upgrading to FW 518.

However, I have made a good experience in data recoverying with the CubeStation, connecting the HDs to a Linux box, etc.

What is bad is that to do something you have to know Linux. If you (or a friend of yours) know Linux, I can give you a hand.

Give me an instant-messaging contact (Jabber, ICQ, MSN).

Marco

Interesting to read about fw. 521... I downloaded it, but I cannot find any release notes (or similar) stating what issues are different from fw. 518. Maybe one of you guys knows?! Or Franklin perhaps?

Good to hear that your volume was repaired

@everyone
It is not advisable to install firmware greater than 518 unless directed by our support team; these firmwares are for limited-evaluations only.

Ooops... Installed it before your post :-(

However after what the 518 has done, I think nothing in the world could be worse.

Lost volume

Unread post by apilloud » Sun Dec 23, 2007 8:06 pm

I'm experiencing the same problem: lost volume. Two of the four disks (two months old samsung 320gb) are written "initialized" instead of "volume 1".

I opened a support ticket a week ago because my rs-406 crashed every time I tried to upload more than 800mb on it.
I received a standard answer from Synology support: "bring it back to your reseller" this may be a mainboard related problem.

Prior this very enlightened instructions, I was asked to update my system to 518. Although this update did not change anything to my initial problem, shortly after, the system notified me with some "Volume 1 has been checked for consistency". A couple of hours later the notification system sent me graceful last message "Volume 1 has crashed".

The repair option is greyed out. Although I reported this to Synology support three days ago, I did not receive any answer, so if anybody out there has a clue about how to solve this ?

m.aicardi I read your post, but I lack the knowledge to find my way on a recovery trip in LinuxLand

Fixed raid 5

Unread post by apilloud » Fri Dec 28, 2007 12:57 pm

Technical support connected to my server tonight and remotely fixed my volume everything is back to normal.

I'm very glad, but I did not receive any explanation about what caused the problem and how they fixed it.

I also realized than support is operating during office hours from a gmt+8 zone, wich explain the rather long delay between my call for help and their answer.

note: synology support is located in Taiwan, therefore the time difference....

Re: CS-406 (518) crashed the raid5 volume - data lost- need help

Unread post by whitewool » Sat Mar 01, 2008 11:17 am

I had exactly the same problem today. CS-406e, FW 518, working ok during last months, and this morning disk 2, and disk 4 out, data lost. Disk 3 also was declared broken during the evolution of the broblem, but not at the end. I don't worry for data but I'm worried for the Cube Station.
There was a difference though, since a couple of months: I attached a 120 GB USB disk low consumption, power supplied by USB, that worked perfectly.
Since CS-406e is a bit weak as power supply perhaps this could have helped the crash. Besides that happened during multigigabyte transfer.
After the problem I decided to restart the Cubestation and when it came back I was not able to connect to the web interface.
The ping worked anyway so now I'm rebuilding the Cubestation through the Assistant. Just reinstalled FW 518 and created a new volume on 4 250 GB disk.
The consistency check is running.......
