Issue with Western Digital 500GB WD5000AAKS harddrives

Unread post by Patric » Sun Dec 02, 2007 10:44 pm

I have found a reliability issue with firmware 518 and Western Digital 500GB WD5000AAKS harddrives, see here my thread http://www.synology.com/enu/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5815

In short, unless the SATA-2 drives are strapped for 150MBbps speed they will not be reliable in the DS207+, possibly other Synology devices.
As I am a new customer I cannot confirm reliability of earlier firmware versions, but for now if you want full SATA-2 speeds, avoid mixing these Western Digital drives with Synology DS207+, and firmware 518.

Unfortunately though the drives now stay connected to the device (does not disappear out of the array when you least expect it), there are still corrupted data coming from my second DS207+ when writing Acronis TrueImage files to it. Still investigating this; WDs DLGDIAG extended test showed no issues with the single disk I was using in it, but I will be running the complete test suite that overwrites data to spot any issues with the disk itself. Any bets on where the issue lies; anyone betting on the drive? Anyone for the DS207+ ?

Edit Edit: Now I have copied a 8GB file from a WinXP machine to this second DS207+ and then compared this file using COMP.EXE and files were identical. It seems Acronis is having problems writing a 5GB file but not WinXP writing an 8GB file. Will definately have to check the SMART counters on this disk to rule out the disk.

Unless I'm mistaken this board uses a SiL3512 2-port SATA150 controller.

@everyone
DS207+ uses Marvel 7042 SATAII Controller
DS207 uses Sil3512 SATA Controller

@Patric
I'm conferring with our hardware engineer about your post, rather interesting post.

Just a note informing that I'm on a business trip for two days and thus have no possibility to do any more troubleshooting or test solutions. So I am not ignoring any answers, merely unable to do anything for the moment.

The last thing I did before leaving was upgrading to 519 (provided directly by Synology Support), and strapping back the disks to 3.0 operation.
I have one unit on "burn-in" while travelling. Will update when back.

I have just found this post, and have had problems with the same HD and the DS207+, along with Firmware 2.0.3 - 0518. Here is my post from another forum

Hi Franklin,

DS207+
2 x WD5000AAKS-22YGA
Raid 1

Firmware 2.0.3 - 0518 upgrade from 2.0.3 - 0513

I also have a similar problem. My Disk1 light is on, but when I login I see that Disk1 is "Not Initialized", but Disk2 is "Normal".

When I bought the DS207+ I installed two WD5000AAKS-22YGA and straight away I had a problem with Disk2. I moved a few cables around trying to see if it was a cable problem. Finally the system booted up and everything has worked fine for the last week. Tonight I upgraded the firmware, and during the reboot the system could not find Disk2.

Both HD's seem to work fine. Each HD has been plugged in to Disk1 and work fine. I am able to see all the data on the disks, so I think the disks are fine. I have also switched out the power and data cables between the two HD and they also seem to work fine. It is only when I try to plug a HD into Power Plug2 I have problems. I have plugged a HD in to Data1 and Power2. and the system has not seen the HD.

If you have any suggestions I would appreciate it.

Best Regards

Bryn

As replied in the older thread; after upgrading to the 519 pre-release firmware the diskstations have been running stable and reliable. I recommend contacting Synology support with your problem.
DS1513+ / DSM 6.1-15047 Update 2 / 4 x Seagate ST8000VN0022 8TB, 1 x ST4000DM000 4TB

DS215+ / DSM6.0.2 / 2 x Western Digital WD20EFRX 2TB

Support has been great. Sent me firmware 519 which I installed. Had a slight problem which they emailed a suggestions for and now I have my DS207+ back. I cannot say enough about the quick response, at one time I had two support guys answering my one email. BTW, I think I have sold two DS207+ for you.

Thanks

Bryn
