So you purchased a 300GB hard drive, but the computer reports only 279.39GB available, and you want to know where the other 20.61GB disappeared to.... It didn't disappear.

What you see here is a differnece in scale, since manufactures report capacity as a Decimal gigabyte, which is defined as 1,000,000,000 bytes. But computer read everything as binary and a Binary gigabyte is defined as 1,073,741,824 bytes.

So, the percentange difference between a decimal gigabyte and a binary gigabyte is 0.9313 percent. So, if a manufacture states a 300GB hard drive, do the calulation of 300 * 0.9313 = 279.39GiB, which is your actual usable storage.

Also note, IEC released a new standard of measurement to differentiate from Decimal Storage Measurement (300GB) and Binary Storage Measurement (279.4GiB)
