Can't Map Drive in Windows - Solution

Unread post by spepville » Wed Feb 19, 2014 2:20 pm

I have been searching for an answer to this problem the past few days, so I thought I should share the solution that worked in the end for me.

For those of you who are running Windows 8.1 or 8 (or possibly 7, but I didn't check) and get an error trying to map a network drive to your Synology NAS, you may need to turn on the following Windows Feature - SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support.

Image

You access this through the Control Panel -> Programs -> Turn Windows Features On/Off. Scroll down in the list and make sure that SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support is selected. I think this is typically enabled by default, but I must have turned it off at one point.

After enabling this, I was able to map a drive and use the Disk Replicator program. Before that, I was getting an Error Code 64 (Authentication Failed) when attempting to map a drive through the Synology Assistant or login through Disk Replicator. Map Network Drive in Windows Explorer would just give a "Windows cannot access" Network Error.

Thank you so much! (I wonder why there aren't any replies yet?!)

I gave up on drive mapping and used a combination of FTP and NFS (with XBMC) instead, but this is the way it is supposed to work on Windows. For a non-HT PC this is the way to go, for a HTPC use the XBMC/NFS combo.

Thanks again!

Yes, thanks! I've bookmarked this thread for later when I get to configuring some client machines.

And to add to the tip, another alternative (probably - untested) is to enable SMB 2 and Large MTU on the NAS instead of changing this setting on Win8 clients. In DSM 4.3 you can find this setting in Control Panel > Win/Mac/NFS > Windows File Service tab. This is going on the assumption that Win8 has SMB 2 enabled by default (likely) and SMB 1 disabled by default (ie what the original poster is essentially telling us!).

Thanks!!!
Actually, the feature was enabled in the first place. But I disabled and re-enabled it and now it works... Magic :?

Control Panel->File Services->Enable SMB2... is enable on your NAS?
Just speculating...W8 may have SMB1 disabled by default?
I only have an W8 on a virtual machine and I can map/access a share without any problem. I have SMB2 enabled on my DSs. And in W8 VM I don't have SMB1 feature turned on.

1) Go to device manager
2) Go to 'View' (menu on top) and tick 'Show hidden devices'
3) Delete ALL your network adapters
4) Scan for hardware changes (your network adapters will reappear)
This did the trick for us. Good luck.

Great this solved it for me.

Thanks

Thanks to this thread I had a look at SMB settings, my DS111 has been through many version upgrades and were configured for SMB 1, I also just recently upgraded my old Windows computer to one with Windows 8.1. With DSM 5.2 I could now enable SMB 3, and with Powershell cmdlet Get-SmbConnection (executed as admin) I could verify right away that my share connections now used this new protocol. Great!
DS111 (DSM 6.1) and DS109 (DSM 4.2), both connected to gigabit ethernet and wireless lan.

@drabisan: THANK YOU!!!
I thought I was going mad! Even tried to restore some user permission settings - no luck.
I was only able to connect via IP address to my \\[ip]\home. But now, after changing the setting to SMB 2, it works again: \\diskstation\home is ALIVE! :D

Hint: DSM 5.2 -> Control Panel -> File Services -> Windows File Service -> Advanced Settings -> Max protocol ... Enable SMB 2!

Nope ... back to square one!
Doesn't work! No matter which version I try (antondb or drabisan). I can only connect through the IP address!? Any ideas are appreciated.

My Windows 10 build 10130 upgraded to 10166 last night and all of a sudden none of my mapped DiskStation network drives worked.

This morning, I realised I didn't have SMB1 enabled in my Windows installation. However, I went ahead and enabled SMB3 in DiskStation and now all works. I'd say SMB3 is newer and should be preferred chosen protocol if supported by your OS: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Server_Message_Block

I was just in the same state as Gilu. I have a windows 7 OS and checked all the suggested requirements but still got network path not found. I eventually found that my NIC had its IP node set to peer - peer. Use regedit to set it to hybrid and now share mounting from diskstation works. From the search trail I used to find this it is clear that it has been found and refound over the years but stayed at the level of forums and blogs. It would be nice if Synology could elevate it, it might save someone else a lot of time.

All the solutions described here didn't work for me.

I'm using Windows10 Ent x64 and I can't even see the SynologyNAS in my network, but I can access is via any web browser.

My solution is:
1. Go to Control Panel>Network and Internet>Network and Sharing Center> Advanced sharing settings.
2. Remove the check box from [Turn on automatic setup of network connected devices.

Viola! Your NAS appeared on your network!

Regards,
Ali.
