No NAS in file explorer with Windows 10 Creator - tried all fixes I could find

Unread post by KnightRid » Thu Nov 16, 2017 1:02 pm

Oh my goodness this is the most ridiculous thing Microsoft has done to date. I can no longer see my Synology 1512+ NAS in file explorer, like everybody else.

I tried the master browser thing (both computer and NAS and individually), no fix - BTW, when enabling it on the Synology 1512+ it activates the Guest account with NO password! I cant even change the password. I changed permissions to none except the one still shows the ability to read/write but i have not tested to see if the Guest account can actually do anything as I would prefer not having it enabled.
I tried the enabling of SMB 1 (already was), no fix
I have tried the registry deletion of the (oh my lord a brain fart....I can not think of the name but delete the ones with ## in front of them - I have read so much my brain is fried), no fix
I have reset the network connections, no fix
I have tried a second network card and applied all the above fixes that are applicable to it, no fix
I have tried the hosts file entry, no fix
I have tried enabling Homegroup junk, no fix

Now after all of this total BS in which it seems Microsoft is trying to "fix" an OS that is so broken it needs a complete re-write based on *nix, if I type \\NASNAME in file explorer it does let me see the directory structure and go to them in file explorer but it still does not show under COMPUTERS and I have to manually do this every time I restart (I have not had time to test if Windows will just dump it every now and again or not since Windows is so perfect *sigh*, yea I am pissed right now)

So, does anyone have a RELIABLE fix. One that allows the NAS to show in file explorer all the time even after a restart?

Network speed has always been all over the chart, one time max next time 5mb/s with no apparent reason. That I can live with (most of the time) but this breakage of using file explorer is too much.

Can this be fixed by Synology?

For the love of everything holy, can someone at least point me in the right direction.....

I'm currently facing the same issue. Did you ever get a resolution?

Someone said the BETA version of the DSM gives the ability again but I have not had time to sit down and mess with it.

For now, if I have to restart my computer, I just go to file explorer, Network, then up on the address bar I just do the \\NASNAMEHERE

I was hoping to have time to test the beta out to see if it does have the nas back in network without manual adding but it has not come to pass as of yet.

Synology cannot help you here, it is a windows "feature".

Bute there is absolutely no need to make a manual connection each time.
In explorer, click my computer, go to the top bar and choose computer.
create a network connection to drive X: or whatever with \\NASname\public, just tick the remember box, and it will connect automatic each logon.
do the same for photo, music, video and whatever share you have and it is fixed for as long as you do not reinstall windows.

Or buy a Mac

DO NOT enable SMB1! it is just not safe.
Please share if a reply was useful or how the issue was solved, it helps other DS users.

I BELIEVE you are talking about mapping a network folder (in file explorer select THIS PC then COMPUTER in the menu at the top of the screen then MAP NETWORK DRIVE, which doesnt make sense since you can only map a folder lol). I haven't found out how to map a whole drive as of yet. This is ok unless you have a couple thousand folders ;)

that is what I meant yes. This mapping is on Synology shares, not on folder! As far as I know, nobody has thousands of shares...

It is indeed not possible to map the synology (my mac can do this by the way..).
But once you have mapped at least one share, windows will detect the DS, and your DS will appear in the network. So it is a workaround....
