Windows 10 cannot find my DS416 after Windows 10 Update

Postby Danilushka » Tue May 02, 2017 2:57 pm

I had the "homes" directory mounted before the update, now my attempts to mount the volume fail with Windows reporting it cannot be found.
I am running the latest DSM. DSM reports the server is working and healthy.
I tried the server name and the bare IP as well.
I can ssh into it just fine but I didn't buy the DS416 to use the command line to exclusively access it.
Is there an on-line guide to detailed technical troubleshooting problems with Windows 10 mounts?
What is it with Windows and SMB? Why is it so unreliable and inconsistent?
I am new to Windows (having come from Linux and MacOS), but UNIX, MacOS, and Linux just work. Why can't Windows?
what are the secrets to making it reliable?

You can mount shares, not the whole volume. Regardless of the OS you use. You may find a solution in the underground part of this forum (system management mods) with keywords like mount bind or symlink.

Just a few hints from my experience:
Try again after setting your lan to trusted in stead of public
Try switch of the firewall and antivirus
Use synology assistent to do the mounting
Be sure your ip adress in in the correct range
Please share if a reply was useful or how the issue was solved, it helps other DS users.

I don't know how to troubleshoot the issue, but the latest Windows 10 update corrupted this for me (among other things). I can't access the diskstation using \\diskstation anymore either.

I can access it with \\diskstation.local, but that may be because I have Bonjour installed.

For the record, Diskstation and access to its smb shares has been 100% reliable and consistent for me in the past.

I finally got access by figuring out how to access SMB from Windows (I migrated to Windows after years of UNIX/Linux/MacOS where SMB just worked).
