So I've manually installed the new beta from the 13th now it is just a case of wait and see if it has done the job.

Seems to have resolved the file saving issue with Microsoft Office.
Thanks, will do my two this weekend.

Yeah - all of my customers have been OK for now. However got the odd shared excel file "locked" due to an old ~ temp file from Excel, but removing these seems to free up the users complaints.

the NAS' now saying update 5 available - think I'll wait a while this time!

The Directory Name is Invalid - error after recent Windows update

Unread post by timanderson » Wed Jan 10, 2018 3:50 pm

I have two separate cases (different networks) of users with problems opening or saving Office documents from network drives. In both cases:

- Everything was fine until a few days ago

- There is now an intermittent but common error "The directory name is invalid", or an application crash, when opening or saving a document from a network drive, shared from a Synology NAS

- Applications affected include Word, Excel and Outlook

- Not all users are affected

- Have tried adding network location to trusted locations in Word/Excel but problem remains.

Anyone else encountered this? Any suggestions? I suspect it is related to the update KB4056892, recently installed on PCs with the issue.

Hi,
search the forum there are multiple threads discussing this. If search doesn't find anything use google on the forum.

So we're using DSM 6.2 beta 2, and this problem still persists --- only our users are saving from a Windows 2012R2 server, instead of Windows 10 --- but exact same issues, word/excel file save corruption, files save, but create 0 byte files. I have both a RS3617xs+ and DS1817+ that are both doing it, at different locations. Needless to say, I'm being asked to put Windows Servers back in place until this issue is resolved.

Thanks; seems to be an issue with the Synology firmware and the disabling of SMB 1.0 for security reasons. Fix is to install at least DSM 6.1.4 update 3.

There are a few semi-workarounds posted on here, however, I agree. This issue is extremely annoying--like every day I have to fix the issue annoying. And it seems crazy to me that this still has not been addressed with a simple update in the beta yet.

Troubleshooting SMB share

Unread post by bjjen » Sat Jan 20, 2018 2:16 pm

Hi all

I've been running the DS716+II for quite some time but all of a sudden I cannot access my mapped network drives (windows 10). When I try to run \\nas or \\[local ip] I simply get a dialog "windows cannot access \\nas" and diagnose cannot identify the problem. My nas is accessible by any other means eg. I can logon to diskstation.
I'm almost sure the setup on my nas is ok. It is even possible for me to access via run \\nas from an older pc (windows 7). Did anyone experienced something like this or have some hits on how to solve? I think it is a problem on my windows 10 pc but I have no clue how to troubleshoot this issue.

Thanks.
