When are DSM upgrades no longer available?

Postby blackcows » Sun Apr 17, 2016 5:06 pm

Currently have a 212J and would like to by another but wondering when this model will become obsolete? I had a 209 and know that DSM upgrades stopped at 4.2, is there a systematic way Synology goes about this?

210 stopped at DSM5.
So if I count on one major DSM every 2 years that makes it 3 releases.
Although the 3rd release is making the DS slow.
I don't know if there's an official statement for how long a DS will be supported, but I personally won't rely on it, from performance perspective, for more than 4 years. Security wise, it may be 5-6 years, but that's a long life in this world and, most likely, it will be a slow and obsolete device.

That's just warranty length. Nothing to do with updates.

The time period mentioned doesn't have anything to do with updates. Any j-series will be updated for longer than its warranty since it only has a 2 year warranty but updates go back about 5 years.

The DSM Upgrade column just says current status.

Yes I know. But based on that list the OP can estimate approximately how long he will get updates for his model.
