DS411slim Cooling Upgrade

Unread post by SavellM » Thu Mar 10, 2011 1:26 pm

I have my DS411slim running for the last 3 hours, and its already hit 58c
I was wondering if there was a way to either increase the fan speed as I would like to keep it cooler, or otherwise replace the fan with a more powerful one?

I'm not fussed about the noise, but if its like a tornado then it might be an issue.

Currently I cannot hear my slim at all, so I'm guessing that giving it some extra power or better fans, wont increase the noise drastically.
But I would rather have better cooling.

My 409slim (4x500GB 7200rpm Seagate Momentus) has never eclipsed 50C. And individually the drives are between 32C and 38C, with slot 4 always being the hottest.

I notice the unit was hittin 68c earlier when actually transferring files.
It's in a well ventilated area with nothing around it.

My drives hit 42c (I only have 2 drives in it atm)

You can see your system temp in system info.
Hover over the green icon and it will give you a temp.

Your HDD's temp can be found in storage and the 2nd tab.
Will give you all your HDD's temp.

its about 62 degrees.. And its been idle the whole day.... I think we need some synology support here...

I read somewhere about a parameter to increase fan speeds....

And with the unit generating so much heat being idle I wonder if its doing its nine Watts..... My guess is it is using more than that.....

Ok today I turned it off...
it was 71 degrees.

I really do think we have a cooling problem with the 411Slim.

My old 409Slim has been indexing for three days now and the temp = 42 degrees. That seems normal.
Anybody knows what to do ?

Although I know we all want to mod the ds411Slim, i do think this discussion really belongs http://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic ... 65&t=35167, were it should be. Nothing is modded and nothing is done to my DS411Slim, still it's running 71 degrees with disks in hibernation...... Something is terribly wrong with it....

Don't know why I waspointed to the mod scene ? But it's just a regular question....

We would like a mod to cool the machine, then we could place that discussion here but until we do have a mod it should be as a normal 2011 discussion

I have emailed Syno support who is going to adjust the fan settings to make it come on quicker.
Will report back when they are done and get back to me.

Are you using DSM 3.0 or DSM 3.1 ?

And I am really curious about what Syno is going to say......

I am not sure about the time I had dsm 3.0 on it.....

These high temperatures would have caught my eye pretty quick.

Is there anybody with a ds411Slim and DSM 3.0 with the same temperatures ?

Or...

a ds409Slim upgraded to dsm 3.1 ?

I did find something here : http://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic ... 19&t=22776

but I really don't know what to enter,
would love to see the content of /usr/syno/etc.defaults/scemd.xml on a dslim409 running dsm 3.0
