Disable status lights on front of nas?

Unread post by Coatezy » Sat Jan 16, 2010 2:39 am

Hi guys,

New to the world of nas.. Have been playing around with windows home server for a while now but fancied a change. 8) My DS409 is located in my bedroom and I have found the status lights to be very bright at night.. I was wondering if there was anyway to disable the led's on the front of the nas easily within the manager area? I have had a good look around the forums but have yet to find anything on this? :(

Thanks!
Tom

On the CLI you can use
echo 6 >/dev/ttyS1
to turn off the Power LED.

other values to send to >/dev/ttyS1 are listed on the German forum:

Hi, by doing such a mod would it void my warrenty with Synology? I wish there was an option to turn on/off the status lights on the web gui. From playing around with windows home servers I have spotted a couple have that this funtion built in such as HP machines. Thanks again!

There is an utility for de synology on itari's NAS page called "automate".
You can download it from "http://itari.pcip.de/Skripte.html"
It wil be installed as an 3trd party application and works fine.
Thanx Itari

I am also looking for an easy way to switch off / on all the status and power LEDs on the Disk Station. The website mentioned above is broken, and the script cannot be downloaded. How can I then turn them on and off?

By the way, why is Synology making so big and flashing diodes on their devices? And they don't make any hardware button to turn them on or off. Shame!

DS211j DSM 3.0-1354 Disable Power LED

Unread post by possum » Tue Mar 01, 2011 5:35 am

Hi,

My DS211j is in my bedroom and the blue power LED is soo bright that I have to power off the NAS before I go to bed.
I'm hoping there is a hack that works to turn off this light, either completely, or on a schedule.
I had a look at the following thread: http://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic ... 27&t=20485 ...but the command "echo 2 >/dev/ttyS1" did not achieve anything.

Is there another command that will work for my NAS, or another tool I could try to fix this, or is black sticky-tape my best option?

yes, I was logged in as root.

Anyway, in the meantime, I managed to stumble across the answer, hidden within the code for the german "autoMate" addin...

For anyone else not able to get it working, try the following:
* Tested and working on DS211j running DSM 3.0

1. ssh into NAS
2. login as "root"
3. type:
echo \\6 >/dev/ttyS1
This should take effect immediately - No restart required!

To change the status of the other LEDs, just change the number 6 to one of the other values specified below:
*I have not tested these, please use at own risk :)

Status LED
value="off" value='7'
value="green on" value='8'
value="green blink" value='9'
value="orange on" value=':'
value="orange blink" value=';'

Copy LED
value="off" value='B'
value="on" value='@'
value="blink" value='A'

Power LED
value="off" value='6'
value="on" value='4'
value="blink" value='5'

Ok Guys,

Could you shortly summarize what is the command to disable all the diodes and then what is the command to enabled then back to normal state?

Do they get back to normal state after a reboot?

I think the echo command just 'forces' the current status of the LED.
As soon as there is a change of state (disk failure, hibernation, etc.) the LED will be set by the system to the expected status.
This means that probably if you e.g. force system LED off, when the unit resumes from a hibernation, the LED will be turned on.
Regarding the disk LEDs, they are probably connected directly to the disk interface, so there is no control over them.
No longer using Synology NAS, moved to more open source solutions.

It looks like there is no feasible workaround to the lack of hardware button or software feature to dim/turn off the diodes. Could Synology treat this as a very desirable feature request, please?

I have removed the front panel from my DS710+ to bring temperatures from 40+ to below 30 degrees. Unfortunately, removing the panel leaves the diodes complete uncovered and very bright. Looking for a proper solution to dim or turn them off!

I noted last night that my DS211j entered hibernation and the Power LED did stay off as intended.
Also, the status/activity LED was flickering away this morning and the Power LED continued to stay off, meaning that changes to the other LEDs are independent of each other?

Yet to test this - I will find out tonight when I get home and wake up the NAS. I will report back.

Perhaps there should be a way to bind the echo command with the scheduler.

I can confirm that the LED stays off when the unit both goes into hibernation and comes out of hibernation.

I can also confirm that restarting the device does reset the LED back to normal (on).

Quick question - What is the correct way to run "echo \\6 >/dev/ttyS1" when the NAS boots?

Would editing /etc/rc.local to include "echo \\6 >/dev/ttyS1" be enough, or would this potentially cause issues?

Would this be better placed in /usr/syno/etc/rc.d/S02bootup.sh, or as a separate .sh script in /usr/syno/etc/rc.d/ ?
