[TUTORIAL] How to connect a "APC BackUPS Pro" with Serial/USB converter (e.g. PL2303)

Postby Danysahne96 » Wed Sep 07, 2016 9:31 pm

Hello Syno forum :-)
i wanted to use my old "APC Backups Pro 650" on my Synology 916+. The UPS is connected by a selfmade USB Serial cable which have the same specifications like the original Serial to USB from APC itself. I was afraid when i saw that this type of UPS isn't supported but all "apcsmart" drivers already integrated in DSM?! So i search in the internet found some articles but nothing for the new DSM and new Syno's. So i try to write this short topic. Shutdown and configuration works perfect. Maybe this helps somebody too. It should work with all "Backups Pro" :)

Article extends https://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.php?t=70183 from "mmadela".
Tested on: DSM 6.0.2-8451
Prequisites: SSH login, Putty, connected UPS

1. Control panel: Install "USBSerialDrivers" for you Syno Device. There is a repository or a SPK package for manual installation. (http://www.jadahl.com/drivers.html)

OLD WAY: Activate the USB serial and the ftdi modules (already integrated in DSM):

Code: Select all

insmod /lib/modules/usbserial.ko
insmod /lib/modules/ftdi_sio.ko

2. Run "dmesg" to locate the USB port of the UPS (something like /dev/ttyUSB0). There is an entry with this information.

3. Open the "ups.conf" file with the following command:

Code: Select all

vi /usr/syno/etc/ups/ups.conf

4. Edit the file in the [ups]-section to:

Code: Select all

[ups]
   driver = apcsmart
   port = /dev/ttyUSB0

5. Open the "ups-usb.sh" file with the following command:

Code: Select all

vi /usr/syno/etc/rc.sysv/ups-usb.sh

6. Change the section of "StartAllDrv()":

Code: Select all

local DRV_LIST="usbhid-ups blazer_usb bcmxcp_usb richcomm_usb tripplite_usb"

to

Code: Select all

 local DRV_LIST="apcsmart blazer_usb bcmxcp_usb richcomm_usb tripplite_usb"

7. In the Folder "/usr/syno/etc/rc.sysv" restart the "ups-usb.sh" service with:

Code: Select all

sh ups-usb.sh restart

8. Add the following lines at the end of "/etc/rc.local" before "exit 0":

Code: Select all

# USV Backups Pro
/usr/syno/etc/rc.sysv/ups-usb.sh start
synoups fsd

9. Restart the NAS and configure UPS settings over control panel :-)

HI.
How do the same, only with UPS Mustek? I created a thread here: https://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=128293
