Just installed a Kenwood DDX917WS headunit in my car.
It supports exFAT at no extra cost.
I bet of i looked around i'd find many devices like this.
But only Synology has it as an optional extra.

My biggest annoyance remains the hassles it caused when trying to read several flash drives, and the frivolity of it being only a few dollars when it should have been just included.
It's a tiny little thing that stinks alot.

How many users has this caught out that are still unaware of the reasons why their flash drives didn't work?
Is this the user experience you are aiming for Synology?

As a symbolic gesture of how little the cost means to me i'll put up $100 from my personal pocket if Synology puts up a symbolic good will gesture of making it a standard part of DSM for all.

I do not use it, and I do not pay for it, sounds as a fair deal.
At no extra cost means, that the costs (That has to be paid to microsoft) are already included in the Kenwood purchase prize. You pay anyway.

PLease do not ask synology, also on my expense, to raise the cost of all units with 10 euro to make microsoft happy.

I have formulated it a bit sharp to make the point clear, no hard feelings in any way :)
Please share if a reply was useful or how the issue was solved, it helps other DS users.

eaz, i'm sure you'd have a different opinion if you'd spent hours trying to figure out why your thumb drive wouldn't read in a Synology NAS, but does read in any other NAS.
Also we're talking USD$3.99 which equates to under 4 euro, and in all fairness is probably even less than that if licenced for all units, just like Qnap, Netgear, Seagate, WD, Kenwood and thousands of other companies do in their products.
Picture an alternate scenario, lets say it is included in the NAS as standard, because that's what's happening with every other device that supports exFAT.
Would you care then, and start a thread saying i want my xx euro back for the licenced code you put in my NAS?
Are you upset about the other licenced code the NAS uses and has included in the price without giving you the option to purchase it separately?

This is not an argument about price, we're talking about a NAS here, a device whose primary purpose is to handle files and file systems.
Spare a thought for the non tech savvy user who has some family photos on a thumb drive and wants to put them on their NAS, if it's a Synology NAS and the thumbdrive is exFAT it won't work.
They won't have the nouse to figure out why and will give up.
It's a bad user experience, and Synology should fix it.

It should simply be part of the next DSM update and nothing more said about it.

Thanks for the thread...now I learnt something about Ex-FAT...

Great...just bought the licence for my DS216 Play... 8)

Tried to buy a licence for my DS1010...what utter pants...No package for the DS1010!

...and the data I really want to shift is on the 1010...now I'm going to have to network transfer and then copy to my ExFAT drive.

What a waste of space Synology!
