less is more

Unread post by doktor.notor » Sat Jun 27, 2009 11:10 am

While it's trivial to add

Code: Select all

alias less="more"
to ~/.profile, I find the missing less command totally annoying and confusing like hell. Also, the more thing really doesn't work exactly like less when aliased (e.g., you cannot scroll back in the content when using more). I want less, not more. Thanks.

One way to get fully functioning less is by setting up Optware ipkg, then "ipkg install less". Lot more packages there. See "the Underground modders" subforum.

Thanks. I know about ipkg, however I'd say that less is pretty much the standard pager on Linux systems, as such it should be default IMHO.

+1 for me, adding less as a standard package would be really nice.

I was looking at your posts. 2009. It's now 2017. Still no 'less'.

I find this sad. Hopefully, one day, this will be added to the base.

I just had a longer conversation with support and it became obvious to me that they don't want anyone to use the shell at all. If it is not packed behind a UI option, they seem to become deaf. There's probably no chance at all that they listen to those of us who feel ok to use the shell...

Unfortunately that's how 90% of IT related companies work. The helpdesk doesn't understand it, so we won't support it.

If you're really good at IT thingies, you end up in development. They don't do support.

If you're mediocre in IT related thingies, you'll be in support, you don't understand most of it, so you won't support it.

If you really suck at IT thingies and are a big enough douchebag, you'll end up in management. You won't care about customer needs.

https://github.com/SynoCommunity/spksrc/pull/2818 is a pull request to add less to spksrc.
When you clone spksrc from git you can apply this pull and build a less package.

If you let me know your architecture, I may be able to build you a package.

Hi sciurius,

Seems that the pull request doesn't really move forward,
therefore I'd love to have a package for the 416play (INTEL Celeron N3060 = Architecture Braswell).

Thank you so much!

Kind of disappointing Synology's devs haven't replaced more with less, by now. more was a nice upgrade from the old Unix pg command, but it's been essentially obsolete for longer than I can remember.
