Official Java package

Postby rednoah » Mon Mar 02, 2015 11:16 am

I'd be really nice if there were Java 8 packages in the standard repository. There's binaries for all the major embedded architectures on the Oracle website. I'd be really nice if I could install java easily via Synology DSM package center.

The "Java Manager" doesn't install anything, and thus it's useless since it can't be used as a dependency for packages that may require java to be installed. The current state of things is little better than manually setting up java (i.e. download, unpack, symlink).

I assume this is due to the Oracle licensing agreement, but I'm sure a company like Synology can ask Oracle to let them distribute Java via Synology Package Manager.

You realize this has nothing in common with your original (pointless) request... hmmm?

If the request was pointless why would Synology make a "Java Manager" package in the first place? Making that little ExtJS GUI surely took longer than just making packages from the Oracle Java binaries. Hence we got "Java Manager" (workaround) instead of "Java Runtime" (ideal solution) mainly due to concerns on legal issues.

I'm perfectly fine with OpenJDK builds. No need to disturb Larry on his Yacht.

Here's the first release of my Java Installer SPK package. It'll take the pain out of installing Oracle Java 8 on Synology NAS:
