New Drive, file sharing link 192.168.0.56 not gofile

Unread post by tony.w » Thu Dec 07, 2017 9:31 am

Have the new Drive installed and tried to create a file sharing link. The resulting link is direct to my NAS on the local network, with an internal address of 192.168.0.56:5001/g/x/929048719 etc. There is no Gofile nor an external link I can send someone. Anyway getting an external link to the file with the new Drive?

Did you create at least 1 Shared Folder on it? You cannot just share an entire disk like that.

That is a totally different approach than sharing.

Drive seems to behave differently from Cloud Station? With cloud station I could create a sharing link from any Windows folder that then created a link via GoFile. The GoFile link was accessible from anywhere on the Internet. Drive creates a local LAN link, not a GoFile based link.

So a question, I do have a shared folder but I have nothing in it for now. Do I have to copy and duplicate every file file I want to share in that shared folder? Having more than one copy of a file is going to be a nightmare to keep current and manage. Drive is syncing my files fine from my Windows My Documents folder to the NAS, just like Cloud Station did.

In my case, I'm sharing one single file, I'm not looking to create new DS accounts or "teams" under Drive. With Cloud Station, I could right click on a file, create a GoFile sharing link and email the link for someone to download the file. Worked great up to last week then I upgraded to Drive and can no longer generate GoFile links to share files.

Hang on, now I get what you are talking about, the new Drive App, so far we all thought you were talking about a disk drive...

Drive works in a totally different way than a regular file or folder share, you will need to choose between them. If it is like you say just about 1 file, use the standard fileshare in File Station to save you a lot of hassle.
Otherwise, you will need to follow the workings of the Drive app, not the sharing way, don't try to mix them.

Thanks Flopper,
That's unfortunate if I have to log into File Station to create a link, it was really handy with the Cloud Station app in Windows. In Windows Explorer I could right click on a file, generate a GoFile download link and paste it into an email and be done. Now if I have to log into DSM and navigate to the user > folder > sub folder > file and create a link, that takes longer.

If I were to use Drive, what are the steps to create a one-time download link for a single file I need to send to someone who I likely will not interact with again (i.e., where it's not worth creating a user account in DSM for that person). If Drive drops the ability to create GoFile links for file sharing, what is Drive's equivalent that is as easy to use? Maybe Ii'm missing something.

P.S. I checked and can confirm that if I use File Station in DSM to create a link share a file, the link uses GoFile.

Synologydrive is not made for sharing the way you want to use it, it is made for you and teammembers to have a common drive. If you want to share a one-off file with someone, then that is what you should do, share it the standard (old) way.

You could with Drive, but it will look something like http://yourwanip:5000/d/f/39354442541357920259

Thanks Flopper,
I'll see if i can revert back to cloud Station again, though I recall a note that going backwards was not possible. The old way with right click in Windows Explorer worked for me. It was a very fast way to share a large file. And I could share the link and keep updating the file. When the client or colleague finally downloaded the file, they got the newest version.

I will check out teams and common drives as long as the team member doesn't have to log-in. I can't get clients and colleagues to do that, I create user accounts but most don't even bother logging on.

I've managed to re-install Cloud Station Drive replacing the newer "Drive", I have my file sharing links again with GoFile. What I miss already in Drive is the option to choose to do one-way sync to the NAS, so if a file is deleted on the PC, the file remains on the NAS. Cloud Station Drive only offers either 1) deleting from PC deletes from NAS, and 2) deleting from PC, file gets downloaded from the NAS again.

If Drive could offer file sharing links like Cloud Station, that would be great.

For your info, I don't really like anything about Drive compared to Remote Access if it is for yourself. When in need to share with someone outside your setup, plain and simply File Sharing does it very well.
Hell, I don't even like Cloud Station for that matter. I like to remain in full control of what I am doing.
Ok, that may be a little more work, but at least I feel the I am the boss, not the DSM.

Thanks Flapper,
Do you mean going into DSM > File Station to create a sharing link to share a single file? Whether I create file sharing link in DSM > File Station or in Windows Explorer with Right-Click > Cloud Station > Create Sharing link, either way I end up with a Gofile sharing link. How do you share files while remaining in full control without using Cloud Station? Are you using something like Dropbox or something outside of the NAS?

Yes, the way I use it is by going into DSM > File Station to create a sharing link to share a single file. I can then set it without a need for a user or password, or with as needed, and I can put an expiry date on it if I want to. I usually do this with a folder with 1 or more files in it instead of a just a file, so I can reuse the link all the time. That is how I stay in control. I have no need for Cloud Station or any outside services.
I know the other things have their use, but I see it misused so many times by customers just because they think it is new and 'cool' they should have it.

Right, for me Cloud station did two things, one was sync files from the laptop to the NAS. That was my backup plus I could access those files from anywhere on a tablet or on my phone. Second was using the Cloud Station integration into Windows Explorer to create the links, the same way you do in DSM > File Station. Your idea is good to share a folder so the link can be re-used. I sort of do that with a link to a single file. Say a project is due on a Friday, I send the link on Friday. But if I keep working on the report over the weekend, when the client uses the link on Monday, they get the latest version of the report. And I can re-use the link to send the same file to someone else.

Today I went back to the New Drive and am hoping Synology will add the ability to create Gofile file sharing links in Windows Explorer that people outside my LAN can access. For now I'll create the links either on my cellphone or firing up a browser and going to DSM > File Station. I went back to Drive because of the new ability to do one-way sync, Laptop to NAS.
