Re: DS918+ 16GB ram (2x8GB) confirmed

Unread post by drjobs » Sun Apr 01, 2018 8:46 pm

Oops, spoke too soon, my VSEVEN RAM worked OK for a few days but does not pass the RAM test. On the other hand, I found some older Kingston DDR3, in fact with bad benchmarks, that passes the test in 2x8GB https://www.memorybenchmark.net/ram.php ... .A00LF+8GB .

In fact I was curious if the DDR3 would slow down my VMs, so I Geekbench my Win 10, 2GB RAM, 2 core VM, and found that DDR3 scored around 2200 while DDR4 scored around 100 points lower. For what it's worth, running the same VM with 8GB RAM produced this https://browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/7761051

I concluded that when there is a RAM failure, like I said in my case a failure after days of operation, not a boot failure, the box will not boot again until there is a change in the RAM configuration. I was not getting past the blinking blue light until I removed a RAM chip, and actually I removed the working one from Synology, not the iffy VSEVEN that caused the crash. The system booted happily and was operation, but would not pass the memtest with VSEVEN installed.

I'm using Kingston HyperX Fury Black 16GB (2x 8GB) DDR3L 1866MHz Memory which works just fine and without any issues at all for my 918+

When purchasing the RAMs please note that 918+ needs DDR3L, those DDR3 RAM will not work properly due to the Voltage different.

For my DS918 + I bought one crucial CT102464BF186D.
After installation the DS shows weird errors. He closes himself and starts with flashing blue LEDs, but does not come online.
Quite the same errors as Tonycollinet. Does anyone have an solution?

As mRNACheng notes above, the DS918+ needs DDR3L rather than DDR3.

I understand the Crucial CT102464BF186D is DDR3...that is probably the issue. Also, are you mixing different sizes - like the stock one and your new Crucial? I read somewhere that you should have two the same...

According to Crucial the ct102464bf186d is DDR3L memory. Also see: http://eu.crucial.com/eur/en/ct102464bf186d
And according to the Synology helpdesk it does not matter if different memory chips are used. I've asked them specific.

Then I'm out of ideas!

It's odd, I looked at the website that I bought my Crucial DDR3L ones from and they list the CT102464BF186D as DDR3. Obviously that's trumped by the Crucial website, as you've noted....although looking under the specs on the page you listed above, it says DDR3. Odd - it has both DDR3L and DDR3 on the same page...

Hopefully someone else can offer some advice.

Wow, 32GB!! Has it been stable since you installed them as I am considering purchasing the same modules for the DS918+ that I just ordered? That or my next option would be the Kingston HyperX Impact 1866MHZ DDR3L 16GB KIT - HX318LS11IBK2/16 (8GB x 2)

I believe the only reason you were able to achieve a successful boot with this config is due to a drop in memory speed as I don't think the board can handle 32GB @ 1866MHZ speeds.

Either way, nice tweaking!!

Very strange. I have put the moemorybank in to the DS again.
And did an memerytest. No errors.
And now for almost 5 days the DS runs without errors.

Can you confirm if the 16GB crucial memory stick has worked for you? and also which model did you buy. Looking to buy 16gig stick in the next few days.

We installed 16GB (2 x 8GB) on a DS918+ and it's working fine.

Since DSM 6.2 will include VMM, we wanted to max the ram.

This is the Crucial memory we used.

Hi everyone, could you let me know if everything is fine after several months with the RAM installed? Did you find any problems?

Many thanks.

No problems so far.

I did loose a disk, for some unknown reason, but after rescaning and rebuilding raid, it worked flawlessly again. Don’t think it has anything to do with the 16GB of RAM. Why I stand firm on no problems so far

A little addendum to my failed VSEVEN 16GB stick. I was able to test a replacement, and that one succeeded actually in 2 complete tests, while failing another 7. I will not be using it, of course, but it might have performed nearly flawlessly under "ordinary use", a memtest is some kind of stress test. All kinds of speculation are possible and welcome as to why some memtests would succeed, so a warning to other users, one memtest is not enough, perhaps 3 is a good bet.

WOW 32GB ? - did not know that was possible, seeing that the CPU only supports 16GB.

Have you tried running some memory tests to see if you can actually allocate and use them all ?

SSH'd into the ds918+ and run the command 'top' to see system processs

As you can see from the screenshot the nas is registering the 32gb

Virtual machine manager is also picking up the 32GB of ram
