Just to add to some information for the following RAM:
Crucial 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3L 1866 (PC3L 14900) Unbuffered Memory for Mac Model CT2K8G3S186DM

System wouldn't boot on initial install with the RAM, re-installed original RAM back in (4GB), setup DSM - powered down installed new RAM (16GB) - System booted with no problems, and ran for 24 hours while transferring and loading files. Mysterious improper shut down in the middle of the night while idling. I removed one stick of RAM going back to single channel 8GB and the system has been stable for the last 40 hours, will post back if system crashes again on that particular RAM sku again.

DSM 6.1.5-15254 Update 1
Fully populated machine:
3 WD Reds -SHR
2 ADATA SX6000NP NVMe Cache Drives R/W
1 WD Purple - dedicated to Surveillance Station

**Edit: System is connected to a UPS

I have the same Crucial RAM on mine, no issues at all.

I just ordered my 918 +, in conjunction with it I ordered two CT8G3S186DM and two MZ-V6E250BW, as soon as everything will come I will tell you how it behaves

I'm interested in doing this too using the Crucial 2 x 8GB ones that folks have mentioned above - from this post and general Googling they seem to work perfectly.

The Synology website states: "Synology will not provide complete product warranty or technical support if non-Synology memory modules are used for memory expansion" (see https://www.synology.com/en-global/products/DDR3)

Does that worry anyone or am I being a scaredy cat?

I only just purchased my DS918+...in reality 16GB is probably overkill for me but an official 4GB extra one costs more than one of the 8GB Crucials so it just doesn't make a lot of sense to me to buy the Synology one!

Oh, and if anyone is interested, I found a neat little how to guide here (it's very basic...for those of us who are terrified of touching the inside of our machines!):

Nah, it's super simple to swap out memory sticks on these boxes. The older chassis (412+, 415+, 916+) was pain to get in there.

Adding one more data point:
[*] Corsair Vengeance 16GB Kit (2x8GB) DDR3L 1866MHz (CMSX16GX3M2C1866C11) does NOT work!

The DS918+ fails to boot with both, or just one stick inserted. I confirmed the sticks were OK in a laptop with memtest.

Failing to complete the installation of a new Windows 10 VM with only 4GB (in the end it was probably the USB3 driver rather than the lack of memory that kept crashing Win 10, and Ubuntu apparently), I thought it was time for a big upgrade, and given the limited availability of the the big Crucial chips in my part of Europe I ended up with V7, or VSeven, or whatever that is supposed to be pronounced.

16GB DDR3 1866MHZ CL13 16GB DDR3, PC3-14900, 1866 Mhz, CL9, 204PIN SO-DIMM
(V71490016GBS-LV)
Modelnr.: V71490016GBS-LV

I added it to the system 4GB, and my 20GB system seems to be running 2x8GB VMs wihout problems. There was some excitement immediately upon powering up the box, at first it declared the volume "migratable", claiming the disks came from another Synology, then promised me a reboot that ended up in failed power up, the power button would simply go blue for a few seconds and then off again, I removed cables, plugged in cables again and, voila, after a longish startup I am on!

May I know can it fully use the 32GB since after your insert of 2x 16GB crucial RAM (CT204864BF160B) the dmidecode result shows "Maximum Capacity: 16 GB".

Ended up getting 16GB working with no problems at all with this RAM:

with the mounting evidence that 2x8 sticks are recognized by the os and apparently supported by the processor, we are left with some interesting questions

1. all I see so far is emperical and anecdotal evidence that 16GB is actually used, but I've seen no measurements.

2. it takes some creative reading and language translation assumptions to conclude that the max 8GB quoted by Intel is a "per slot" spec and that their marketing folks have no interest in promoting that the j3455 supports 16, if in fact it does.

3. it's fair to ask why synology chose 6gb as the max supported. that doesn't make any sense unless there is something weird going on like they are trying to unload 2GB modules. something is preventing synology from coming out in support of even 2x4. what is it? sure, you have to test before you can officially support it, but for Pete's sake that is not hard, and the present official stance synology is driving hardware enthusiasts to qnap where the same processor is offered in support of 8GB. u just don't get synology's behavior here.

4. even qnap doesn't come out in support of 16. why?

5. 16GB is certainly attractive but has it been proven to be required? all the emperical evidence suggests yes but there are no measurements or calculations showing this
I can see that in order for synology to support 16 they would need to create test scenarios that actually benefit from it, and test for stability. we can hope that such efforts are in flight

correction. synology now supports 8GB in the 918+ . the product page has been updated.

has anyone verified with measurements a situation that benefits from 16

I tried running the DS918+ with two HyperX Impact (2x, 8GB, DDR3-1866, SODIMM 204) - the system did boot properly and also runs for a while - after a couple of days it just "freezes" and I have to force reboot it.

the support told me to use the synology assistant and run 3-4 memory tests to have proper results. 2 worked just fine, the 3rd then failed and put the nas back into migration mode. using the original ram module for now. everything back to normal.

not sure if the hyperx modules are defect or just not compatible. if anyone has the same ones I would be interested to hear if memory tests have similar results (go to https://www.synology.com/de-de/support/ ... #utilities, start the synology assistant (pc or mac), go to settings, enable memory tests, then run 3-4 memory tests, one takes several hours).

I didn't measure any high memory application. not even sure how to achieve that on the dsm. I noticed the cache calculator does not work at all with 16gb - it does now with the original 4gb

I have 16GB of RAM in my DS918+ and have run stress tests, it definitely allocates all of the RAM and seems to perform fine. Of course this isn't a real-world test, but running many docker containers, or VMs would have a similar kind of demand on RAM.

Code: Select all

ben@nas:~$ free -h
total used free shared buff/cache available
Mem: 15G 15G 134M 6.7M 198M 17M
Swap: 11G 3.7G 7.6G

ben@nas:~$ docker ps -a
CONTAINER ID IMAGE COMMAND CREATED STATUS PORTS NAMES
b98d31e2d404 progrium/stress:latest "/usr/bin/stress --vm 4 --vm-bytes 4G --vm-keep" 4 minutes ago Up 4 minutes progrium-stress1

Would you like to be more specific about "fails to boot"? My system has various behaviors like blue blinking for maybe 10 seconds and then off, or blue blinking for ever, or blue blinking for a minute perhaps and then powering up.
