So I compare the packages by MD5 sum, and they are different. I don't know, what they changed, but clearly changes inside was made, probably to resolve issues, that some users experienced.

Version: 6.1.4-15217-1
(2017-11-13)

1. Fixed an issue where PPPoE cannot be displayed properly in Control Panel.

Thanks for letting us know srandista. I've downloaded it now (just in case!!) and will try it tonight.

I guess they fixed the issue they pulled the update for or maybe rolled back the fix they had an issue with and re-released. Was going to suggest the latter if there was no progress on this today.

I did the update on my 214+ last week. No problems. Today update 1 popped up and I install it.
I had no time to upgrade my 1817+ until yesterday. When the update was not available anymore. Today it is. And I apply it with no troubles. And it's already update 1. So they did some changes in the background.
But yes, 15217 took almost 10 minutes! Much longer than usual!

If you installed the previously pulled update, this new one takes about 5 seconds to install. No reboot required.

If you DID NOT install the previously pulled update, it takes roughly 7-8 mins to fully install and a reboot is required.

Just a heads up.

Just an FYI. The .pat files are really just zip files and can be opened with 7zip or something like that. I have perused the structure before looking for differences in a similar issue that happened about a year ago. I had no luck in figuring what had changed. There were large structure changes to the data in the archive and would require a good working knowledge of the DSM structure and update methods.

I too have only had minor issues with updates, but I do usually wait a week for medium updates (3rd dot revision not dash updates). What I have seen over the years is there are a few reasons the updates go south: HW issue (bad luck in spinning down drives often the first time in months, the atom bug, or something else), configurations lost in translation (often reformatted when a feature is updated or for security reasons), or a combinations of packages or settings that was not completely regression tested. There are so many hardware models and combinations of settings (like the firewall, PPPoE, DHCP, .....) that testing them all for each update would take years.

I created this post, waited a week before installing and did not as I never got a notice about this being available (I only found it when a package said "Updated to support DMS 6.1.4) and downloaded from the download site. I like to download and check the package before installing it so these medium and major updates are done manually (after a full backup and reboot).

I know none of this makes loosing a system when this happens any better, but as long as we have systems this complex, we will have to deal with issues cropping up. Like Scotty says "The more they overthink the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain." even when no one is trying.

Updated my 214+ to the new release with the new drive and all seems ok.
Didn't need the pat file as it was picked up automatically during the install process.
Now restoring the configuration and data. Will see how things are after that.

My DS216play is also death after the update to 6.1.4-15217. Same behavior: Only the front bluelight is blinking all the way after restart.

I removed the HD's to back up the data via a Linux distribution.
Afterwards I deleted all the HD's and tried to set up the DS216play again from scratch.

Unfortunately I cannot install an older version of DSM :(

Does anyone know how to go back to an older version?
Thanks for your help!

Hi,
I upgraded yesterday and now have issues with media playback. Everything was working fine before the upgrade as I was using it all day and then had problems afterwards
I can play media over dnla for approx 10 mins and then it seems to hang so I have to exit and reload.
exactly the same thing with plex however I got the media to play with plex by disabling directplay (temp workaround)
anyone else experienced this?
i've not had chance to try looking at any logs yet
