DS 1517+

Unread post by Andreas Dammert » Fri Jan 12, 2018 5:04 pm

I have been running a DS 1511+ for several years now but am interested in upgrading.

The 1517+ seems to be the natural choice for me but doing some reading I am to understand the processor is 3 yrs old and still not good at transcoding.

I use my DS primarily for Plex and media.

Are there any rumors around on a new DS 1519+ with an improved processor.

Any help appreciated on what to upgrade to.

A

Synology does not leak news about new products.
Eventually they will release new products but there is no telling when or if they will use new processors.

I am still waiting for them to update the DS2415+ which is 3 years old now.

If you need a new NAS now you just have to evaluate what is best from what they currently offer.
If you can wait a year or more they should eventually update the DS1517+ with a new processor.

Your best bet if you need Plex transcoding is QNAP, and something with a Core i3 or better CPU. Their new Ryzen models will shred with Plex.

If you want to stick with Synology you can try something like the DS918+, if you have PlexPass, you should get you hardware transcoding via Intel Quick Sync. Currently my understanding is the that the hardware transcoding quality is inferior to the software transcoding done in Plex, but none of the Synology product line that is not an xs+ series is suitable for software transcoding of high bit rate 4K content or even two high bit rate 1080P streams.

I wouldn't expect a DS1519+ announcement anytime soon. Probably Q4 of this year at the earliest. Even then I suspect it will mostly likely stick with the Intel Atom, but move the C-3000 series, which also does not have Hardware transcoding functionality.

I’m waiting too... to upgrade my current DS1513+ (that’s still an excellent machine, anyway).
My best bet is that the DS1519+ will arrive in april/may 2019.

If you look at their product path, they released the 1513 in may 2013, the 1515 in may 2015, the 1517 in apr-may 2017...

Ciao

I would recommend the upcoming DS1618+ which is supposed to debut in May.
Six bays instead of five.
Upgrading the Atom C2538 used in the current DS1517+ and DS1817+ to the Atom C3538 processor.

Interesting Find, where did you hear about this?

Given we're almost in september... think I'll wait some more 6-8 months (sic!) for a new DS1519+... to migrate my good old 1513+.
