When they finally do announce a replacement for the RS815+ series, I'm hoping that they can shave a couple of millimeters from the physical dimensions. I'd really like to have the +RP's redundant power supplies, but it's just a very little too big to fit into the rack I'd like to put it in.

gahhh!!! What the hell synology?!?! DS3018xs, and refreshes in the the DS918, DS718 and DS218 but nothing for the RS series??

It was September last year that I started waiting for something to replace the then already 2 year old RS815+ (soon to be 3) and I'm never going to buy a system with a C2538 time bomb.

sigh... the comedy

registered to contribute to this post. Please bring something out soon, I'm waiting for a small but powerful rackmount synology, no C2538!

Well there's only 4 devices left in the whole line up that are '15 or '14 versions.

So there's not many other devices they can update first at this point. :)

The new CPU's they will use to replace these really only starting shipping less than a month ago. Unfortunately, Synology is not historically fast at releasing new products real fast after new CPUs hit the market.

... and once they announce machines, demand will probably so high (because of the years it took to release a new version) that delivery will take months :D

well I've now been waiting for 14 months for news of a replacement for the RS815+. Some machines have had 2 replacements announced in that time. So frustrating.

Maybe a thread should start in the new 2018 device forum.

Well, if you REALLY need something new, why not buy an RS815+, if you need/want sth from Synology?

that's simple. Because I do not want the ticking time-bomb that is the Intel C2538 CPU. I also don't want a machine that is soon to be 3 years old.

But I want a 4 or 8 drive synology rack. Don't need a corporate 12+ drive rack.

Do people reckon that Synology think theres no demand for a upgrade to the RS815+? I've been waiting for far too long and have now been tempted to look at QNAP's.

I agree this really needs to move over the 2018 discussions

Would love to see a replacement of the RS815+ or the RS2416+. Like many others on here though, really not keen on paying "new" prices for 2-3 year old hardware with a bum CPU.

An 8 bay RS2416+ with a 10GBe option and 8+GB of RAM would be perfect for me right now.

So... good news and bad news.

The specs of the upcoming RS818+ APPEARS to have been leaked/given without NDA, to a selection of distributors.

I would like to preface this by saying that I am in no way affiliated with either Synology, nor any of these distributors. Please take everything below with a pinch of salt, until (if) Synology publicly confirms/announces the RackStation.

Anyway, I noticed that a number of sites (most comprehensively span.com/nascompares.com - run by the same people) announced and started listing a RackStation 818+. After a bit more googling, it appears a few sites have uploaded new content on the 22nd/21st December - indicating that this is when Synology gave them a spec sheets.

So, rumoured specs:
- STILL a C2538 processor :(
- 2GB DDR3 standard (upgradeable to 16GB)
and most notably a new expansion slot for 10GB ethernet.

Thanks to the identical processor, no 4K transcoding :(, but at least 10GB ethernet is a significant plus.

Anyway, more info can be found here:

WOW! that is a REAL disappointment. I will never trust the Atom C2538 after all the debacle it's caused.

And now I have an unused RX415 expansion unit that I won't be able to use :(

Extra ram slots are always good, but damn... the C2538! I was hoping for something better. the C2538 was released in early September 2013 making it 5 years old. Even the J3455 is better (even though it's slower). I was hoping for the C3558 or C3538

This is completely stupid. Its like Synology has a customer disloyalty team. "Lets see what we can do, or better yet not do, to get our clients to move to our competitors products."

I know lets just rehash the same products over and over with very little product advancement and sell it under a new model number.

The ONLY reason I can see for doing this, is Synology is just being cheap and trying to squeeze every last penny out of the product development life cycle, I'm sure these older parts are much cheaper now than their more current counterparts. Intel is probably giving them away to Synology at this point. So likely Synology is making more profit off a DS818+, than it did from a DS815+, but that profitably is probably lost as more customers move to the competition.

I've been waiting for a long while for an updated DS2418+, but its starting to look like there is a good chance it will stick with the Intel C2000 series CPU also. If that happens, I'm going to QNAP. As someone who sells 20-30 Synology Devices a year, they have just been disappointing year after year lately, not sure what's going on with the company but they have become stagnant on the hardware side of things. The only really new models recently, I haven't seen one person asking for those feature sets and specs.

What's the point of introducing all these new Virtualization features if you're not going to sell models well suited to even run them?

@iknowtech I couldn't agree more. I simply don't understand what they hope to achieve with the same CPU - especially one that is so controversial.

Considering the RS8xx+ and RS8xx+RP are basically stepping stones from Synology's cheaper 'consumer' DS line to the the more expensive 'prosumer/professional/enterprise' line (i.e. moving to rack-mount), I can't see why they wouldn't try to make the RS818+ look as desirable as possible... All we can do is hope that the CPU model was a typo on the spec sheet...!

On a side note, if anyone does still want an RS818+ / would like to know the official release date, my best guess right now would be 11th Jan (courtesy of Czech company czc.cz: https://www.czc.cz/synology-rs818-racks ... 97/produkt), where they list "11/1/18" as the "On offer since (thank you Google Translate!)" date.

As I said above, remember that the specs still aren't confirmed until Synology officially releases it.

I know enough to wait for the final specs. But when you have Synology PDFs out there stating the specs waiting is really a moot point.

The Atom C2538 was released in September 2013 making it close to 5 years old now. Intel doesn't even produce any of the chips in the 'Rangeley' series
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_I ... processors

The new 'Denverton' CPUs replaced the 'Rangeley' series. the C3538 is a much better CPU even if it's 300MHz slower. I just find the choice silly when other products like the DS418play use a Celeron J3355, and both the DS718+,DS918+ use the Celeron J3455. It seems all the other x18 series of machines is getting a better CPU, but not the RS818+... frustrating to be waiting for 16 months for this.

What do you think the chances of me being able to use my RX415 with the RS818+ is? The connector is the same and I HIGHLY doubt they've upgraded it. Probably just got a new stencil for the front label.
