Well i played around a bit with scemd and it seems to be working....

Hottest drive is now 31 degrees, ( and dropping) and system temperature is 48 degrees...

Don't know if it's making a lot of noise right now cause i made the changes from work....
But even if it's a bit noisier i like the temperatures....

Well currently I am trying these....
I am still looking for a balance between fan speeds and temerature.
The Slim stayed cool all day but fan was blowing LOW wicht is audible.
I am hoping that the current settings wilol keep the system cool enough to have a VERY_LOW fan setting. I hope that is less audible then the LOW.
As I am saying I am still experimenting

<fan_config period="4" threshold="6">
<disk_temperature fan_speed="STOP" action="NONE">0</disk_temperature>
<disk_temperature fan_speed="ULTRA_LOW" action="NONE">20</disk_temperature>
<disk_temperature fan_speed="VERY_LOW" action="NONE">25</disk_temperature>
<disk_temperature fan_speed="LOW" action="NONE">30</disk_temperature>
<disk_temperature fan_speed="VERY_HIGH" action="NONE">40</disk_temperature>
<disk_temperature fan_speed="FULL" action="SHUTDOWN">55</disk_temperature>

<cpu_temperature fan_speed="STOP" action="NONE">0</cpu_temperature>
<cpu_temperature fan_speed="VERY_LOW" action="NONE">45</cpu_temperature>
<cpu_temperature fan_speed="LOW" action="NONE">55</cpu_temperature>
<cpu_temperature fan_speed="VERY_HIGH" action="NONE">65</cpu_temperature>
<cpu_temperature fan_speed="FULL" action="NONE">75</cpu_temperature>
<cpu_temperature fan_speed="FULL" action="SHUTDOWN">80</cpu_temperature>
</fan_config>

I did create a case at Synology Support, see what they come up with

Hey Mate.

I followed your advice and changed my settings to the same as yours.
Working like a charm.

My DS411slim System Temp is idle at 50c
And my HDD's are running at 29c/30c

All in all a muchly appreciated dip in heat.

I am thinking of changing out the fan to a better one too, altho more noisy (except I cannot hear my slim now anyway) it will blow more air, so hopefully the fan wont need to spin as hard.

Well I still have a support issue for this.... Maybe Synology will come up with a different fan or a better SCEMD schema.
If they come back to their support issue i will post results here !

My reply from support was we have set your fan to come on full at 60c.

But my temps never changed at all.
I only saw the difference when used your settings.

Just got my 411slim yesterday and now it has been idle all day but system temp is 69 degrees and all 4 hdds are over 40 degrees..
I guess I will try the fix too, just running a little too hot I think..

Does one have to reboot upon applying this fix or is there a service that needs to be restarted?
I hate reboots..

So I put in the new values and rebooted the DS and already after running for 3 mins the temp has gone down significantly.
All disks are under 40 now and system is 10 degrees cooler than before.

You 411slim modders are clever! But why is this effort necessary? Is the 411slim really supposed to run this hot? Has anybody sent theirs back under warranty? Other people don't seem to receive hot 411slims.

I can't imagine 411slims running fans 24/7 are within Synology's stated 16.8W (access) and 9.6W (HDD hibernation) power consumption numbers. Has anybody plugged a mod'ed 411slim into a Kill-A-Watt to measure actual power usage?

How much dust will accumulate inside a 411slim annually with fans running 24/7?

None of my regular HD enclosures are above room temp in hibernation. Why should 411slim sleep so hot?

Ok I got a reply from Synology :

Thank you for your message.

As for the CPU temperature, the 409slim thermal value is read from an external sensor which close to CPU. The number imply CPU "surface" temperature. However, the 411slim thermal value is read from CPU integrated sensor which is inside silicon package. The number is CPU silicon-die temperature inside the package. According to our test report, the temperature gap between surface and silicon-die is around 22 degree Celsius.

If you have further questions or suggestions, please feel free to contact us again.

So I replied :

Although I think you have all the details correct, the behaviour you are predicting based on the facts are not correct.

The ds411Slim runs significantly hotter than the ds409Slim. The temperature measured on the disks (so not the board) is about 20 degrees higher as well.
So maybe the measurement is done in a different place, this results in a completely different temperature profile of the machine itself.

I do not feel comfortable with a device running this hot (if you put your hand on it it really feels hot) unattended at home 24/7.
Worst of all is that it's reaching these temeratures while in hibernation !, So it's not even really doing anything.

The fact that the same disks in my 409slim wich were at room temerature (~20 degrees celcius) are now hitting 42 and 45 degrees (celcius), tells me
this device is getting really hot. A processor temperature of over 73 degrees tells me it's running quite hot as well. If I put my hand on it, it really feels quite hot.
