DS216play or DS216+II for Home NAS?

Postby vfpeter » Sun Sep 10, 2017 2:46 pm

I am looking for a NAS device for my home. I want to do the following:

1. Have this device a central storage for photos, files that I can access from anywhere on my home network laptops and mobile devices.
2. Automatically backup to an external cloud from the device.
3. Looking for 2 BAY in RAID (mirror).
4. Effective error handling when DRives fail so that I can replace them.

Which of the two is better? DS216play or DS216+II ...

Thanks,
Pete.

If you can stretch out for a plus model, go for it. Better in the long run. Also they might be upgradable (RAM for exp) in case you need it down the line

Thanks @Rusty1281 and @rgarjr. The price difference is only $50 between both of these. So I might as well go with DS216+II.

Also, how easy is it to backup to Backblaze from DS216+II?

Classic backup is not supported via a typical backup tool, Hyper Backup, but there is a B2 support via a CloudSync tool. Within a wizard you can set it up in minutes

Thanks @Rusty1281!

From what I read, I should be able to install CloudSync on DS216+II easily. However, what's the disadvantage in not using Hyper Backup?

Also, what drive is better between the two:

    - Seagate 2TB IronWolf NAS SATA 6Gb/s NCQ 64MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Hard Drive (ST2000VN004)
    - WD Red 2TB NAS Hard Disk Drive - 5400 RPM Class SATA 6 Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD20EFRX

p.s. My both Seagate Barracuda 2TB drives failed with Corrupt root. So I am inclined towards WD

HB is a backup tool and CloudSync is a sync tool.

I have all WD in both of my NAS boxes and I'm happy with those. Seagate (from a personal exp) are a bit louder. How these new IronWolf behave I really can't say, so go with your gut and make sure you have backups. No matter what device/HDD brand you use they will all fail at one point.

Thanks @Rusty1281.

I am ordering DS216+II + 2 Drives.

Once I get them, I will be setting u my B2 Cloud account.

My last two Seagate Drives in RAID ended up with Corrupt Root. I had ReadyNAS from netgear. I did not get any kind of alert till it crashed. I am assuming Synology has alerts that tell you if the health of your drives starts deteriorating.

Also, I want to keep them up and running 24x7. While these drives are not enterprise grade, is that prudent?

It will be fine. Backup as always considering that you never know when both drives can fail (notifications or not). Synology has SMART support and diagnostics as well as data scrubbing but a good backup will be something that will save you in the end.

gl and welcome ;)
