Wich hardrive to choose, for an DS411+

Postby Kedde86 » Thu Dec 09, 2010 10:08 pm

Hi All Together.

I have a Synology DS411 +
I have 4 new drives in, but have many doubts about what I choose?
they must of course be compatible with my server (ds411 +)
The price has nothing to say, especially when I have 4 pcs.

They must be min. 2 Tb be like in 7200 rpm, but it makes a big difference if they only run at 5400/5900 rpm?
The new "green" hard drives from WD, it's something I have to keep me from?

Some of them I've looked at are:

1. WD Caviar Green WD20EARS - harddisk - 2 TB - SATA-300
2. Samsung Spinpoint F4EG HD204UI - harddisk - 2 TB - SATA-300
3. Seagate Barracuda LP ST32000542AS - harddisk - 2 TB - SATA-300
4. WD AV-GP WD20EURS - harddisk - 2 TB - SATA-300
5. Hitachi Deskstar 7K2000 HDS722020ALA330 - harddisk - 2 TB - SATA-300

Are any of them here can recommend? if which one?
if you know others who might be better, you must be happy to tell:)

many thanks for your help ...

Hi Kedde86

... That's right.

Search this forum and you'll find tons of information about Green models (old = OK, new = Not OK). The Eco Green are new models and not designed to work with NAS devices ... I'd say deliberately changed to not work with NAS devices. Other WD disks are OK.

The other disk brands you've mentioned - at a glance - seems OK.

Best regards,
Claus

Thanks guys:)

Then I just have made a decision about which disk I should choose?

what do you mean / i around which I should choose or recommend an entirely different?

Seagate Barracuda ST32000542AS LP - hard drive - 2 TB - SATA-300
Hitachi Deskstar 7K2000 HDS722020ALA330 - hard drive - 2 TB - SATA-300
or an entirely different? in the same price range around

Would think it's pretty relevant to take a running 7200 rpm instead of 5400 rpm.

My DS411 + will be filled with a lot of data.
server will be crammed with 8TB disk space.

last question, it will not take mega long time to format and prepare NAS with so many and so large hard drives? :-(

It will take a loooong time. In fact, I recommend to start it in the evening ... it might be done before the next morning, maybe / maybe not.

I'm afraid to comment on any specific harddisks - I have no experience with the one you mentioned.

Hi Kedde86

I have a DS207+ which was initially equipped with a Seagate (11th generation, which was bad) and a Samsung (2 x 1TB in RAID1). The Samsung was not even supported by Synology, but it worked for me. Then came Samsung support, my Seagate disk crashed and I purchased a second Samsung 1TB (now 3rd generation).

The Samsung disks are not particularly fast, but they are low power, low temperature, low noise.

Other people love their Seagate disks ... others looove their IBM/Hitachi disks - these are the exact opposite of the Samsungs (they are power hungry, noisy and fast).

UPDATE: There is a 2TB 4th generation Samsung disk out, but lacks compatibility. See thread here:

Thanks :)

i also asked Synology for some advice:

Dear Cristian,

Thank you for considering DS411+. Please feel free refer to our HDD support list for all the hard drives verified to be compatible with DiskStation. Regarding WD20EURS it's not tested yet in our lab, and Samsung HD204UI is having potential issue in data loss please see here (see link in the bottom). Samsung just released a firmware patch as a fix but it still need to be verified. Before that I would suggest you choose a disk model from our compatibility list.

Check this link:

:)

not regarding that WD20EURS is yet supported officially - whats the users verdict of WD20EURS, does it perform, is it rubbish, the price is very fair and highly candidates for purchase...

any comments on performance could be extremely cool

DS210j | DSM 4.0-2198| RAID-1 WD1003FBYX-01Y7B
DS207+ | DSM 3.1-1613| RAID-1 WD10EACS-65D6B0 (for netbackup)
Mainly using synology for NFS shares...

Regarding the WD AV-GP WD20EURS, here is an article describing why these drives are NOT suitable for a NAS or desktop.
They are specifically designed for AV appliances, PVR's CCTV etc. and have custom firmware to suit those type of appliances.
