Just incase someone asks, cuz I know someone will. The RK after the model serial number just means it's a retail kit.

Thanks,

Net....

Maxtor Diamond Max 10 250 Gb in DS101G+
It's OK but this hard drive is very hot, too hot.

You shouldn't use this HDD or use an 120mm fan !

Sorry for my english :D

Synology DS-101j

Samsung HD400LD.
OK. Gets quite hot - needs AAM enabled: a bit cooler and very silent.

Samsung SpinPoint HD501LJ, S-ATA2, NCQ does not work with my DS106e :(

Could it be possible that this drive will work trough the Esata connection on the back of the DS106e? Or does the list also apply to externaly connected Esata drives?

Four Western Digital RE2 500 Go SATA II WD5000YS-01MPB0 work fine and cool in RAID 5 in my cs-406 with v2.0.4-.3.0382 firmware.

Don't use *any* Maxtor Diamond Series.

I have tested 4 different Maxtor-Drives with 2 DS 106. They are fine with 80mm+ fans in desktop-pc's, but getting VERY HOT in DS and the noisy fan is running the whole day (see post above). Also the DS' life *could* be very short :-( !

If you reduce Noiselevel (AAM) to min, the Maxtor drives keep cool but are very slow then (80-90% slower!). Not recommended.

I've tested Samsung's SpinPoint 160GB and 400GB 7200U - they really work fine and DS's fan never turned on.

Does anyone know how hot the 750Gb drives are in the DS?

I currently have a Samsung 400Gb but it is proving to be too small and I need a bigger drive BUT I don't want the noisy, whinney little fan running all teh time.

Cheers.

Strange mine (Spinpoint 500gb) isn't working at all.

@druup: I can't tell you why mine are working... I use them in both DS 106, one has got FW 4.2.4ß and the other the "inofficial" Final 4.2.5 :?

---

While searching for a solution to get the HD-Drives a bit cooler I found "easy-to-install" a external solution (fan with USB-Connector):

"THERMALTAKE MOBILEFAN II+"

I'll try it...

Samsung T166 320GB SATA-II (HD321KJ) works in 3GB mode (no jumpers). Stays cool, too, 30 celcius or less, so far.
Firmware: 2.0.3 - 0425

Instable! Went to 1.5Gbps (installed jumpers) and 426 firmware.
Disks stay remarkably cool
(which is one of the reasons I bought them), better than what I expected.
