WD Red with SSD

Postby Mr_G » Tue Nov 14, 2017 12:59 pm

Recently we bought two RS18016XS+ (on late 2016 and one half 2017) and filled one them with 2x 512GB Samsung SSD Pro and 10x 6TB WD Red Pro. The other one is filled with 10x 8TB WD Red Pro and 2x 2TB Samsung SSD Pro.

Very regularly we have a "broken disk" which is actually not broken. It is completely random which disk it is. It is fixed by reseating the disk and rebuild the array and it only happens when using SSD cache on the volume. If we don't use SSD cache all volumes stay stable for weeks.
All drives we use are supported from the Synology site so it should work. We already opened a ticket at synology and there latest repsonse is:
"Recently, we have many cases which they all have the disk drop issue by using WD Red Pro / WD Gold / HGST Deskstar / HGST Ultrastar series. And they have reported that the issue has been solved after using another set of disks with the different batch number."

My believe is this is nonsense since without SSD cache everything works fine so it definitely are not the drives. The SSDs are fine as well Also WD claims to have no failing batches from the serialnumbers we supplied (over 30 drives). Also we did several drive test with WD software which all turned out perfect.

Western Digitals states as below, which is more likely:
"I would like to inform you that in general it is highly unlikely that two different internal hard drives seem to be failing at the same time, let alone several, as you mentioned. This could be a compatibility i ssue or an issue with the NAS device itself."

My goal of this topic is to find other people who share this experience as well. If it is a WD Red problem I can urge them to replace the drives but I have strong believe other drive brands have the same problem. On another topic someone else is experiencing exact the same problem, he solved it by disabling caching:

Below the log of the failing disk of the newest RS18016XS+, after a plugged out we reseat the drives so a status plugged in appears.
