DS918+ compatible RAM

Postby capflam » Mon Sep 25, 2017 10:52 pm

Hi,

I just ordered my DS918+ and looking for compatible RAM.
Synology's RAM model # D3NS1866L-4G is almost impossible to find at a reasonable price.

Can someone please point me in the right direction?

Thanks

As a rule of thumb, I would try to stay as close to the specs of Synology RAM for this unit as possible.

Memory Specs
    Type: DRAM
    Technology: DDR3L SDRAM
    Form Factor: SO-DIMM 204-pin
    Speed: 1866 MHz (PC3L-14900)
    Data Integrity Check: Non-ECC
    Features: Low Voltage, unbuffered
    Voltage: 1.35 V
    CAS Latency: 13

But here's the difficult thing.
I never recommend mixing RAM, so if you decide to go with another brand, it would be best to replace the pre-installed Synology memory module.
This could offset the savings if you're only looking for an extra 4GB.

The Synology

Crucial has a similar spec 4GB module (CT51264BF186D) for around 40 USD. (or 80 USD for 2x4GB kit)
Disclaimer: I have not yet tested this module with the DS918+.
However, amazon has the Synology 4GB module for about 70 USD (bringing you to

Also, if you do plan to try a different RAM module, I'd recommend purchasing from a reseller with a good return policy in case of any compatibility issues.

Is 8GB the actual MAX for the 918+ ? Can we use higher density chips e.g. 8GB to get to 16GB RAM? (unsupported of course...)

The video is in German (Closed Captions work well enough), but it appears as though iDomix confirmed the DS918+ can actually handle up to 16GB of RAM.
iDomix Video: Synology DiskStation DS918+ RAM Upgrade 8, 12, 16 GB

Be aware, overall system stability may change depending on the model of RAM you select and which operations you choose to run on your device.

The 4Gb Crucial module, CT51264BF186D, works perfectly in the DS918+, alongside the standard Synology 4Gb module. The specs are identical and I've had the Crucial module installed since I first unpacked the NAS ! Cost £25 in UK.

Hi there,

i've just installed 2 x 8GB HyperX 1866MHZ DDR3L.
It works like a charm. NAS seems to work much more faster and now i can run my Docker containers and VM more effectively :D

2 x Kingston HyperX 8GB 1866MHZ DDR3L works fine. FYI: the Kingston is CL11, and Crucial is CL13, so Kingston may be a little faster, but runs hotter.

I have also bought a kit of Kingston HyperX RAM, with model number HX318LS11IBK2/16. This is a kit of 2x8GB.

If I put one of these Kingston strips (doesn't matter which of the two) in the slot in which the original 4GB came preinstalled, the DS918+ is VERY unstable. It doesn't make any difference if I leave the front slot empty, or put the other Kingston strip or original Synology strip in that slot.

So, now I have the original 4GB in the back slot, and one of the Kingston strips in the front slot so I get 12GB, but that sucks because I cannot use the other 8GB then.

This is very frustrating ... anyone any idea what may cause this? I'm afraid I have to return this RAM. I also tried Corsair memory a few days ago, but that was unstable in both slots.

The ds918+ seemed real finicky about the ram sticks. When I first installed them, it wouldn't boot. So I pulled all drives and installed just the original ram. Then used the "hold power button until beep starting shutdown sequence." I made 1 change at a time, and booted the unit, until it would boot with the new sticks. Reseat the ram sticks, and try again. Once it boots sucessfuly without drives, shutdown, install drives, and fire it up!
