DS218+ memory specs?

Unread post by dick w » Sun Sep 17, 2017 4:46 am

The datasheet and hardware installation guide for the soon-to-be-announced DS218+ have been posted.

They don't answer (at least) one question:

Apparently the device can be user-upgraded from 2GB memory to 6GB, and it's DDR3L 1866 memory. But no spec is given for form factor. SODIMM seems likely. (And, from the picture in the hardware installation guide, this looks like what it is.) (E.g., http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/ct51264bf186dj) But maybe it's UDIMM? Can anybody answer for sure?

I don't know if DSM, with my low home workload, really needs 6GB vs. 2GB. (If/when I get MariaDB up running on it, it might be more useful.) But memory, bought generically, is pretty cheap. (<5% of the cost of this build.) As long as you have the hardware open, why not?

If history is something that we can use here, then no. Its not soldered. + models have ram port(s) that can be filled and upgraded

Manufacture doesn't have to be the same, but that doesn't mean that all of them will work. But its not set in stone, you can use other brands.

Ok, thank you! Because a price difference is about a 70€ and 4 GB RAM costs about 25-34€.

Can you upgrade the memory beyond synology's recommendation? looking to buy a ds218+ with more ram for the virtual manager

Its all about CPU thats in that box. CPU will have its limit regarding memory management. There are some models out there that were never officially pushed to the market with more then 25% of their maximum ram, yet they run just fine with CPUs maximum supported capacity. Considering this is a new model of NAS it will take some time for someone to test out the maximum ram can be installed and run stable.

FYI - Just tried putting a 4GB G.Skill RipJaw SO-DIMM in my new 218+

PN: F3-1866CS11S-4GRSL
Specs: DDR3L-1866 CL 11-11-31 1.35v

But I just get a blinking blue light and the DSM never comes up.

I even tried replacing the built in module with it (required a little teardown), with no luck, so its not a DIMM compatibility issue, the 218+ just does not like this stick of ram.

I dont have an easy way of testing it to see if the g.skill dim might be bad, but I'll try another brand and see what the outcome might be.

I followed a teardown on a 216+, which is the same chassis - and was able to get to the other DIMM. Its right behind the processor, and you can kinda see it behind the metal shield between the Main Board and the Hard Drive Cage.

I dont see any reason why you couldnt run 2x4GB for 8GB total - I think they just say 6 because accessing the other SODIMM slot is a pain and they preload it w/ 2GB modules.

Just an update - I picked up another Memory Module, and this one works with the DS218+
