DS413 - Hard Drive Compatibility

Unread post by Nas4life » Wed May 03, 2017 6:41 am

Hi there,

I have a Synology Diskstation 413 and I would like to know if I can use a 10TB hard drive like the Seagate Iron Wolf with my DS413 even though that particular HDD (and other 10TB HDDs) are on the "incompatible" list. Some people suggest that it may work but that the tray mounting holes wont fit?

So if I managed to physically insert a Seagate Iron Wolf 10TB hard drive will it work?

I need more HDD space and not being able to use 8TB or 10TB drives in a $500 DS413 would be a real buzz kill.

Please advise :)

Are the drive trays on the 413 the ones you need screws on them?

The hard drive bays are slide in trays that do not have screws. However, the hard drive itself needs to be screwed to the tray.

The drives are a bit thicker so you might need to flex the drive tray a little to fit all 4 screws on the sides.

So you think the Diskstation will recognise and operate the drives properly?

Yes, but your DS1812+ is offically compatibale with 8TB drives... For example: Seagate ST8000NM0045 - 1RL112 Enterprise Capacity 8TB 3.5" SATA HDD Enterprise.

My DS413 does not have any offical 8TB or 10TB drive compatibility. Hence my original question: Can I use a 10TB hard drive like the Seagate Iron Wolf with my DS413 even though that particular HDD (and other 10TB HDDs) are on the "incompatible" list?

Did you find any information or test compatibility yourself?

Having DS413 I want to buy WD 10TB Red drive and not sure whether it will be supported..

Ok, finally got an answer from Synology support (after about a month of writing go and back)
Quote from mail:
"I got the answers from the Quality Check team, and it requires some explanations.
The DS413 was discontinued early and not produced anymore in 2014.
As such it was never made with new trays to support new High Capacity Hard Drives.
However, the DS413 is compatible with some trays with the new design : D7 trays.
The Quality Check team confirmed me the WD100EFAX should work with these D7 trays.

Yours Truly,
Technical Support Synology
Armand"

Personally have not checked whether old trays will also be compatible, but at least NAS can be expanded with newer disks
