I am new. My ? -- Can you really utilize above 8 GB of memory? Is 8 GB not really much if I am planning to use only 1 VM, few docker images and transcoding 2 streams of 4K?

2 random restarts in 3 weeks of run (both restarts in 2 days timeframe) with Crucial SO-DIMM 16GB KIT DDR3L 1866MHz CL13. So not sure, if its memory issue, or something else.
DS918+ (4GB RAM, 2x4TB SHR, 2x256GB read/write cache) business, DS916+(8GB RAM, 3x2TB SHR) home, DS213j(512MB RAM, 1x1 TB single, 1x 500GB single) off-site backup

Any special process/steps for doing the upgrade? I got my NAS and boot it up with the original RAM stick and without any disks, just to check if it was powering up fine, etc. I managed to find it using find.synology.com and then turned it off, replace the original RAM stick with the 2 x 8GB Timetec sticks I got (same posted here some posts ago) but it didn't start.

Then, I switched back the original RAM stick leaving the NAS AS-IS. I m,oved my disks from my old DS415+ did the migration, all the updates, etc, etc. During the weekend, I'll try to just stop it and try the RAM upgrade again and see if now that I had configured it, this will work.

But if anyone has any tip about this, please let me know.

Gabriel.

I had the exact same issue.
16GB upgrade and got weird issues.
need to start the device like 3 times before it boots.
Looks like the memory check was shortened so when it does not finish the memory check in time it will turn off the device.
After placing 8GB in the device all my issues were gone.

Tried 2 DDR3L 1866 16GB kits and all had these issues.
I am falling back to the "supported" 8GB and call it a day. I do not need a scheduled reboot to fail my device.

Also one of my issues was that at night the device completely locked up with the 16GB kit.
Not worth it for me.

Folks, unfortunately no luck here with my 2x8GB kit. Mine is the one we already commented about here: Timetec Hynix IC Apple 16GB Kit (2x8GB) DDR3L PC3L-14900 1866MHz for iMac 17,1 w/Retina 5K display (27-inch Late 2015) A1419 (EMC 2834) MK462LL/A, MK472LL/A, MK482LL/A (16GB Kit (2x8GB))

I was able to boot with 12GB using the original Synology (4GB) + one of the 8 GB sticks. It seams one of them is not working fine.

I will try to resell them here in Brazil and then, when I have an opportunity, purchase the Crucial one which seams to be the more successful here. In addition I upgraded my old DS415+ from 2 to 8GB using a Crucial module and it worked fine for years... It seams these Synology NAS are very pick about the memory we put in.

Hello everyone, could someone help me to solve my problem?

I bought 2 sticks of HX318LS11IB/8 ram (hyperx impact black 8GB each).

If I test one at the time they don't work on my NAS ds918+.
If I mix the ram with the original, it is stable.
If I put the 2 together, sometimes it boots, but unstable ; In other times it won't boot.

What could be the problem, and how can I fix it ? Because the ram is not cheap :(

I'm hopping that someone who understands of rams could clarify me and help me to solve the problem.
