Problems to load Media Library to Plex on Docker

Unread post by Gawan » Wed Feb 14, 2018 12:17 am

Hi,

I am fairly new to docker, but managed to bring a UniFi-Docker up and running, and my Plex-Docker is running is well and I can reach it via Web.
BUT ... I am unable to load the media content .

What I have done so far:
1. added a shared folder /share/movies/ to mount-path /data/movies
2. opened all plex-ports in the synology firewall

What I expect to be missing:
1. the user mapping between plex and synology

I read two threads about userid or uid, but to be honest I have no idea where to start and what to do.
I can not send SSH-commands to the plex-docker, because I do not know how and where.

Could someone please give me a hint how to solve this ?

First of all there is no need to access the shell in the plex container.

Permission mapping is done via container environment variables.
1. access your nas via ssh, execute the command 'id' to see your users UID and GID
2. edit the settings of the plexy container and set PLEX_UID with the number from UID and PLEX_GID with the number from GID.

With SSH - id I get the following output:
uid=1024(admin) gid=100(users) groups=100(users),101(administrators)

So I add the environment vars to the plex container: PLEX_UID 1024 and PLEX_GID 100
I restart the docker container and connect via http

unfortunately I still cannot read the content of my movies and series folder - it simply does not start to read and analyze

For any reason I do not even see the subfolders of "movies" if I try to add a new media library inside plex - thats a bit strange

Please share your settings for volume mappings and who the owner of the source folder is.

I have added two folders in the "Volume" tab on the docker container

File/Folder Mount
Share/Movies /data/movies
Share/Series /data/series

The owner of all of them is "admin" - my main user

You statisfied the only required precondition: You did the permission mapping for the admin user, who is also the owner of the source folder from the mapped volume.

what remains:
- check if you can see and access the folders and files from the shell. If it works, it should do the same inside the container.
- if the src folder is a mount point (as in network share, mount --bind, loopback mount of a FS) that is mounted after the container ist started, the content will be neither visible nor accessible inside the container.

Hint: the Plex forum has a dedicated subforum for Docker.

Hi,

unfortunately I do not really proceed here.

I can access the folder via SSH:
/volume1/Share/Movies

I can NOT find the mounted folder /data/movies in the /docker subfolder via SSH

I am sorry, but I do not really get this sentence:
"if the src folder is a mount point (as in network share, mount --bind, loopback mount of a FS) that is mounted after the container ist started, the content will be neither visible nor accessible inside the container."

I am not really deep inside linux terminology and logics.

Is Share/Movies located on volume located on one of the harddisks of your nas?

Yes, when I go to "File Station" I can see it as a subfolder of NAS001/Share/Movies
If I add it to the docker volume list I have to choose it from the existing folder, I can not type in anything

I guess i found the issue...

I assumed you would be using the docker image plexinc/pms-docker.
Even though the image you actualy use is no where visible, i figured that your Image uses env variables that mine does not provide... and I Do use the official image.

Thus said, which image ARE you using?

It is named "linuxserver/plex:latest" and it is the top rated docker container if I look for "plex" in my synolog docker registration

I installed plexinc/pms-docker now, and added the two environment variables - unfortunately I cannot start the container, it results in an error:

Critical: libusb_init failed

Locked

Return to “Docker”
