DS415+ NOT powerful enough for 1080p transcoding?!

Unread post by jobeve » Wed Sep 24, 2014 12:05 pm

Yesterday, Synology updated the official transcoding FAQ page to include the new DS415+:
https://www.synology.com/en-global/know ... se/faq/577

To my surprise (and disappointment), Synology categorizes the DS415+ into the "non-DS214play/DS415play" Group 1, meaning that Synology claims that it can NOT do on-the-fly transcoding of 1080p video files. This is surprising to me, given that it does have a fairly powerful quad-core processor.

Has anyone seen any actual test results for transcoding using the DS415+?

PS. The DS415play is unfortunately not an option for me, due to the DTS licensing issues in DS Video which would give me no audio for most of my uncompressed blu-ray MKV rips, combined with the lack of Evansport support from Plex.

I'll try this shortly with Plex (assuming I can find a DSM 5.1beta for DS415+ so I can migrate). Got the unit today.

Excellent, many thanks oRBIT! If possible, please try with the 'heaviest' possible files to really push your DS415+ to the limit.

If I may suggest, please use high-bitrate files from...
http://jell.yfish.us/
...and please report back where your DS415+ hit its limit. Without transcoding, and using NFS, my DS209 can easily 'send' 100 Mbps files to my media player. In reality, very few blu-rays go above 40 Mbps.

Also, if possible, could you verify that your DS415+ and Plex-combo can transcode material with DTS audio, for example DTS-HD MA, down to 2 channel audio so that for example iPads can play the audio?

I'll do that. I gotta be sure about migrating first..

DS415+ doesn't support Plex. :( Can't install the official package. Guess they have to compile a special version.

GOOD NEWS! Plex is working on DS415+.. Had to modify the .spk to enable the "avoton"-CPU. It runs fine now. Lots of testing to do. :)

Excellent news oRBIT! :D I am so looking forward to hearing your results with high bitrate files! Please, please, let the quad-core be powerful enough!...

I can't get them to work. I get an errorcode. Videostation won't play them either so not sure what's up with the jellyfish-files.

I've done some testing now, streaming to my iPhone 5S. 1080p have some buffering issues (now and then, but not always, read below), 720p seems to work perfect.
Perhaps 1080p issues can be fixed(?) by adjusting settings in the iOS-app.
I've never liked the settings in Plex, they are pretty confusing and not that userfriendly.
The DS415+ CPU is running at >=90% with 1080p, and about 40-60% with 720p).
Anyway, here's the settings on Plex (iOS) I'm currently using:

Video-tab
==========
Wifi: 1920x1080, 20mbps (seems to be ignored no matter what, if I change it to like 420x420, 320kbps I can't see any difference)

Advanced: Direct-streaming (not sure if that's the correct translation, it says "Direktströmning" on my Swedish phone), is checked.
Direct-play: Quality
User universal transcoder: Checked

Hints for best settings are appreciated.

EDIT:
Here's a few tests I've done:
MKV ~5700kbps, 720p, High@L4.1, CABAC / 5 ref-frames, 6-channels AC-3 (448kbps), subs. Works perfect.

MKV ~5700kbps, 720p, High@L4.1, CABAC / 6 ref-frames, DTS (1500kbps, 6-channels, 24-bit), subs. Works fine.

MKV 8Mbps, 1080p (1920x1080), High@L4.1, CABAC / 4 ref-frames, DTS (1500kbps, 6-channels, 24-bit), subs. Buffering every now and then.

MKV ~10.8Mbps, 1080p (1920x1040), High@L4.0, CABAC / 4 ref-frames, DTS (1500kbps, 6-channels, 24-bit), subs.
Buffering every now and then.

MKV: 9300Kbps, 1080p (1920x800), High@L4.0, CABAC / 3 ref-frames, 6-channels AC-3 (640kbps), subs. Seems to work fine!

Many many thanks oRBIT, for your detailed report!

Unfortunately, this does seem to indicate that the DS415+ may not be quite sufficient for my needs... Although your buffering issues could be a wifi related problem, the fact that the processor seems to exhibit a work load exceeding 90% "already" around the 8-11 Mbps bitrates you have tested, is not a good sign.

Please do post back again if you do any more testing which either shows more stuttering problems, or (hopefully) that this was related to something else than the CPU.

Thanks for the nice report!

Which Plex version have you tested?
There's a new Plex Pass version with the following changelog:
Improved reliability in media analysis and transcoding.
Improved quality in video transcoding.
Improved speed in video transcoding, especially when starting new sessions and when seeking.
Maybe this will improve the performance?

I've used "PlexMediaServer-0.9.9.14.531-7eef8c6-x86.spk".

EDIT: Actually tried the latest Plexpass build now. But still stuttering every now and then in 1080p content. Perhaps they can optimize their builds for the DS415+ (??).

I just tested some movies with PlexConnect on an AppleTV @1080P 10Mbps (DTS/AC3) and it works great!
CPU is around 80-90% but no stuttering :)

Can you please report the transcoding speed factors from PMS logs ?

Open up the Plex Media Server.log file located in /volume1/Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Logs/ and filter or search on the string "speed =>". You'll see some results along the lines of :

Code: Select all

2014 00:58:47:418 [7644] DEBUG -  * speed => 2.8
2014 00:58:49:426 [1312] DEBUG -  * speed => 3.0
...
The meaning of this number is explained here: https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articl ... -buffering

Also, can you check if all CPU cores are being used ?
Thanks !
