Glacier Backup Failed...Error=[unknow error]

Unread post by RyleyinSTL » Thu Apr 04, 2013 2:04 pm

At aprox 80GB of 90GB my Glacier backup failed. The file it failed on, in the log below, is only 15.6MB in size and isn't corrupted in any way. Upload had been running steady at about 500Mbs for days. What is annoying is that the error message contains no information. Error=[unknow error] Not sure what I can do with that. I will report this to the beta tracker.

Does the NAS have more detailed logs somewhere?
Level Date & Time Event
Error 2013/04/04 07:26:49 Task [Backup Started Apr 01-2013] backup failed.
Error 2013/04/04 07:25:16 Upload file [/volume1/Photo/2010/PALM Pre Pictures/CIMG0087.mp4] failed.

Information 2013/04/01 10:11:47 Start to backup task [Backup Started Apr 01-2013].
Information 2013/04/01 10:11:46 The schedule [ time: 02:00 Interval: Sunday] of task [Backup Started Apr 01-2013] was created.
I selected the failed backup task and clicked "back up now." Will this start from the beginning, backing up everything anew? Or will it realize that 90% of the files already exist at the destination and just bacup what didn't work the first time?

My experience was that if a task failed, backing it up again would create a full backup (i.e., upload everything anew). I only got incremental backups if the task completed successfully.

Not sure, however, that this past experience is necessarily a good predictor for future performance ... :?

Thanks for the input. It seems as if that is what it is now doing.

I tried splitting up my files a bit to see if that would help. Nope. Got another Error=[unknow error] (sic) again today. Too Bad really, as I had hoped this might be a solution for me. I submitted both a beta ticket and a support ticket but haven't received any response yet. Is it possible that Glacier is just not developed to work very well with your average American residential HSI service (30/4)?

Perhaps I'll give the more expensive S3 a try or even the headless CrashPlan hack I saw around here.

I had exactly the same error, please let us know if you get any informative answer from the support :-)

I submitted a support ticket on the matter and did receive a reply. Tech support says that it might be possible to monkey with things in such as way as to get the backup to start again from where it last left off, rather than starting again from the beginning. Unfortunately I had already re-run the original backup task and then canceled it when I observed it was just backing up everything again. But I did create a newer Glacier backup after that (for a smaller chunk of data) which failed, so my hope is that we can try the "resume backup" from that task.

My original report to Synology did also ask more pointed questions about what exactly the generic error message meant and if there was a more detailed log of the backup that I might be able to look at...these questions were seemingly ignored.

While I'd ultimately like to know why the backups fail, and thus prevent that from occurring, I would be okay with a "resume" function, especially if they can work that into a future release of the Glacier Backup package.

[quote]Ryley,

If you create a new task it will do a full backup. If we just modify your current backup it may see that data already setup on Amazon Glacier. Please download a kernel log from the system using the instructions below and send it back as an attachment.

(For DSM 3.0 or above)
1. Log into the DiskStation Manager as admin.
2. The URL path will look similar to http://192.168.1.49:5000/webman/index.cgi
3. Add ?diagnose=debug to the end of the URL path (ie http://192.168.1.49:5000/webman/index.c ... nose=debug)
4. Press Enter to save the debug.dat file.

Thanks,

A resume feature would be nice (but fixing the problems better of course) - It's too bad that an error can ruin the whole backup job. Hopefully they'll update the package soon :-) but thanks for the update, much appreciated.

I see the Glacier backup fail each time I try to do it, when it is backing up a particular file.
The file is something in my iTunes media folder, a movie that is 4.74GB in size. I'm speculating that this is due to some sort of upload size limit on file size to Glacier from Synology. Does that sound right?

Two questions:
1.Has anyone found solution to this issue, as the last entry was in May?
2.Has anyone really been able to get backups onto Glacier consistently and in size?

I have tried backing up one large file and multiple 4gb files, same result.
I think this came out of the development oven a bit early.

I have the same problem. Glacier backup fails. Very small folder backups work but I'm trying to get 1tb done and it just keeps failing.

I am seeing what I think is the same issue. I'm trying to upload a 7.2GB job (made up of ~3500 files, all of them under 25MB in size). It keeps failing with errors similar to the log below.

(The exact file it eventually dies on is different every time though-- and according to the status messages, the upload is trying to restart from where it left off. However it never gets very far, just keeps failing.

Also having problems with Glacier failing. One complete backup of 3Gb with 1,000files and 7 failed backup attempts. Failed attempts are all on different files. Using 750kbs cable upload so that might be a problem? Spent too much time on this so going to try FastGlacier with a manual upload to see if that works.

Our engineers are looking into this issue, however we haven't been able to pin down the exact cause and haven't got so many user cases to investigate, I'd like to encourage users experiencing this problem to contact our support team:

@RyleyinSTL,
As you are already in touch with us, could you send me a message with your ticket#?

Thanks for your help,

Have you checked the DS system time? In my case, it was 5mins ahead of the Amazon server time which caused the backups to fail. I synced it again to pool.ntp.org and now it's fine.

I was having similar issues with the Glacier backup failing with only little information being provided in the logs.
Task [Backup1] backup failed
Despite having an NTP server for my Date/Time to synchronize, it never ran/updated. My system time was >5 minutes off and was causing the backup process to fail. Make sure to check your system time to see if it is off and manually run the "Update Now" to synchronize with the NTP server.

Why is this process not running correctly? http://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic ... 19&t=65323
